Hey,

I was just wondering for the best technique to attack past papers. I came down to four options and was wondering what was best when studying for the trials.

1. Exam conditions - studying before
2. Attempting with notes
3. Attempting the test in exam conditions - no studying to find out what I don't know
4. A combination of all three

So far, I have been using number 3 for Maths, I think I should be doing 4 for all my subjects?

Thoughts?

Cheers,

Why don't you do it once with notes?
Then after don't do it, see if you remember everything :)

I did Maths/English papers under exam conditions. Didn't bother with Phys/Chem though.

No notes for any of them. Remember REVIEWING and MARKING your exam scripts with marking criteria and revising the parts you got wrong is 10x more important than actually doing the papers!

It really depends on what works for you and the subject. For maths, this is roughly what I did:

- Made sure I had covered all the content
- Did the exam papers without a time limit just to familiarise myself with the structure and format of the exam. I only did a couple under these conditions.
- Did them under full exam conditions.

With essay writing subjects other than english, I didnt do many under exam condition as my main aim was to improve my overall technique and master the nuances of writing a band 6 essay. Also, like iSplicer said need to make sure you actually mark and review your work - with subjective stuff (marking essays etc) its probably best to have someone do it for you (i.e. teacher, tutor)

Doing past papers is important not only for the questions themselves, but also to become familiar with the style of the exam. In my opinion they are the most important form of HSC study.

I normally do English past papers with a list of quotes handy. Apart from that I do all my past papers under exam conditions, although I'll occasionally go through and select questions from topics that I'm weak in.
