Established =/= better. Just because you're the oldest uni doesn't mean you're the best.
Then I must protest that new also does not equal better. So your comment had no grounding at all.

Well, if the first thing is true - that kind of cheapens your Advanced Maths degree, imo. Advanced Maths at UNSW means you have done Honours. While Advanced Maths at Sydney does not necessarily mean you did Honours.

Highlights the differences in degrees. Same name, different stuff.
Not really. You get an advance maths degree, and then you get an honours degree on top, which your Uni doesn't have a choice to not do. If you did honours it would say with your degree, so it doesn't cheapen anything.

Not really. Honours is extra, but more people do honours at usyd anyway because they are able to facilitate more people, and the cutoff is higher (with no subject bonus points) so it's mostly for the brighter minds too.

Are there really that little people doing adv maths (USYD). The cut off is quite high so I'd assume lots of people want to do it...unless its all for reducing the number of spots...

I'm just saying UNSW is better for maffs. Not only do we have nice leather chairs, but now we also have large TV screens that blast propaganda out.

This propaganda leaflet convinced me: https://www.maths.unsw.edu.au/sites/default/files/maths_a4_flyer_p12.pdf

plus the leaflet has my name on it so i'm extra biased

you do realise atar has zero weighting on whether honours is undertaken or not, right

Do your own research into the degree and make an informed decision. It's difficult saying which one is better because it depends what you want out of the degree and uni life in general, not to mention that if you ask people here they'll mostly just wank off to the uni they go to.

Omg, screens and chairs! Wow, UNSW must be really good at teaching material, because that is so how it works! (sarcasm)

I do. But I also realise that the kids who state rank in Maths that want to do BSc(Adv Maths) come to USyd and there's a reason for that, they care more about actually teaching good material and shit rather than whether there are big screens and spiffy chairs (even though we do have the Carslaw Hub which has big screens and white boards and stuff to work on).

And I also realise that if you applied for USyd you probs wouldn't have gotten in. That's maybe why you don't like it that much, because they didn't want you.

Well, for the last 2 years Adv Sci has had vacancies so anyone who applied got in, whether or not they met the 95 atar (from 2 people i've heard from who do adv sci now)...and the course is exactly the same for 1st year. So then transfer to adv math if that is your desire.

Well, you have to get *close* to 95 and have done science subs in school (they say on the website something like that).

And advanced science doesn't really "fill" because places are uncapped now and classes for advanced science aren't prescribed (you can pick most of what you want to do) so not everyone does advanced maths, and advanced Chem, and advanced bio, etc. they usually just do the ones they need to major in advanced science.

Well if you want to raise the point of Terence Tao, a lot of his mathematical success can be attributed to his involvement with the Australian Mathematical Olympiad programmes at an earlier age, in which the University of Sydney is heavily involved.

But again, I must reiterate in an earlier post, let asianese do his own research and decide from there. Because maybe you and Riproot look for different things in a Bsc(Adv Maths) degree, in which case your claim that UNSW is better for you and Riproot's claim that USYD is better for him are both valid.

Quite frankly I think both USYD and UNSW are excellent universities for that particular degree and in the long run it will make very little difference which one you choose.

Consider travel, social life etc. as well when choosing a uni :)

I just put them in order of ATAR cut off. I can change them later on if need be.

But without sounding egotistical I think the chances of me not getting any of my top 4 preferences are pretty slim.

I agree with this.

I'm only providing biased bullshit because shadowdude does it all the time for UNSW and it just annoys the shit out of me that he acts like UNSW is so superior because USyd is actually really nice, and I really enjoy it, and I have found that the advanced Maths first year courses are quite challenging and having them separate allows you to pick the stuff you want to do later from first year.

Yay.

Yeah, the fourth one might go up though because that's one of my preferences. ;)
