FK, so i'll another case:

80+ all subjects top 10
Yeah that'd be about mid-high 80s. You have to realise ATAR is just a rank, don't be thrown off by what people on this forum are getting - they aren't a good sample of the state. If you are ranked around the middle in all subjects at a school ranked similiar to yours then you are likely to get an atar around the middle - 70s. The marks you are listing dont correspond with the ranks you've said at all - 90% across all assesments should be easily rank 1 in most subjects at most average schools.

So ATAR is determined by my rank?

What about 80%-85% all, rank 2

Not entirely, it's just internal marks are calculated solely off ranks and the gaps between the ranks. 50% of your HSC marks, and thus atar, are from the external exam and is independent of the ranks and marks in school completely. Ranks are used for estimation since they are the best indicator of possible perfomance in the external exams. The atar you'd get really depends on how good your grade is, that's not saying your grade will "pull you down" - it just reflects the fact that if your grade, as a whole, perform well then it will be hard to get a higher rank. The marking standards across subjects and schools differs heaps so you'll find most people on here won't take into account marks unless you are at a very high ranked school.
