hey guys!
I'm going to be starting my 3rd year doing a double degree Civil/Environmental Engineering at UNSW in 2013 and I applied for internal transfer to do B Eng/Com as I don't think I have much interest in Environmental Engineering. I'm just thinking... is this a wise move? I only have around 2 years left for my engineering degree (pretty much neglecting environmental engineering as I do not want to get into it, currently doing all civil courses) and if I get into commerce, I'd have to start fresh in commerce when I'm already half way into my Engo degree, this would add quite abit of time onto my degree (I think maybe a total of 6-6.5 years), also some of my electives I've done during my first and second year won't count as I'll be doing a double degree.
I am informed that I could study something called an MBA which is related to commerce after I finish my engineering degree but I'm not too sure? Would this be a better choice to make? Should I just drop it (say if I do get the transfer) and do straight Engineering?

Thanks

Since you are so far into your course i'd probably suggest you consider going the MBA route in future (NOT straight after graduation!) and not bother with business. As you've found you don't get electives in combined courses so your current electives are wasted time in a way - in terms of course progression. I dont know what the situation is like at UNSW but at UTS there are a few Eng subjects which are business related that Eng/Bus students get to avoid, if you've done any of these type of subjects then thats more time wasted.

It's really up to you, i give a pretty biased oppinion because i've not been a fan of business (i.e. commerce) at the moment. It's hard to explain but it feels like im being prepared for jobs i will never have. I'm really wanting electives too so i can specialise further in software so transferring to straight Engineering is really tempting for me...

Hey! thanks for the quick reply!
Yea, I think it's the same at UNSW, some engo courses are missed out in a double degree.. I've been following the straight civil recommended pathway (since i wanna drop enviro) so i'll probably be very behind if i decide to take on com eng. I'll probably do MBA if i really want to get into some commerce related courses later on. :)

Congrats! I'm waiting on my results tonight (or tomorrow if not early), i already know my GPA for the semester though so i'm expecting to be pleased =P.

Did you get a second oppinion? I'd hate to think i solely swayed someones oppinion on their degree lol. It really does seem like the MBA route is the better idea though, especially if you can get your future employer to sponsor it!

I asked a lot of people, and I'm heavily leaning towards doing a single degree. Also, I heard that if i wanted to drop the commerce degree (say I did take the offer) for whatever reason, I'll need a WAM of 75 ie. I might be stuck in this double degree business if I ever wanted to drop commerce because my WAM isn't good enough

No, this is incorrect information. You are free to drop Commerce whenever if you are doing Eng/Com. It's only picking up Commerce as a double degree which you need around a 75 WAM.

I don't go to UNSW so i have no idea how transfers work but even if you did have to go through the complete transfer process again to drop commerce wouldn't it just be 65 WAM?

haha yea, I dont think they look at your WAM when your dropping a course.. I guess to drop, its just a matter of clicking a few buttons on the MyUNSW site.

Possibly, it's up to UNSW to decide the WAM requirements.

You just need to let your School (i.e. the school of your engineering major) know you want to discontinue your second degree and they will take care of things.
