If a student is ranked 1 in every single subject at a low ranked school and does very well in the externals is there anything preventing him from achieving 99.95?

Nothing at all - if he is first internally and does well enough externally it is indeed possible. Whether it is likely or whether his chances are better or worse is another story.

As has been said it is theoritically possible, in fact i knew someone from a low ranked rural school and there was a girl at their school who had a 99.95 estimate. Dont know if she did but they did get two state rankings so i would not be surprised. The funny thing is with very lowly ranked schools if a student got a 99+ atar the amount of band 6s they got (5+) would likely drag the schools ranking way up.

This is actually quite an interesting point. From memory, schools ranked below 500 usually only have a few band 6's if any. If a person were to get five, then maybe this would push them out of the bottom 500. So maybe, it might be an extremely rare occurance to have a situation where a rank 500 school has 5 band 6's.

This. Being first in all subjects imposes no limits upon a student. It is only up to them to determine their ATAR.

Absolutely yes, assuming you're ranked first in everything. But you'll have to be lightyears ahead of your peers if your not in a good ranked selective school. Often 1st in a low ranked school would not even be average in a selective

I would disagree with this point - unless it's just me but I moved from a very bottom-end comprehensive high school to a mid-high end selective school. I was top of everything in the comprehensive school except English where I was 20th.

In the end, I topped physics, top quarter in chemistry and used to be in the top quarter or so in English (until I slipped). While I was accelerated, I was in the top 10% or so in 2U and top 40% in 3U - however, with that said, I was near the bottom in 4U (but that was a reflection of my effort).

Definitely above average - overall ATAR should place me in the top 20-25 out of 150.

I am in complete agreement. Comprehensive schools also have students, who are just as, if not more intellectually apt, than students in a high-ranked selective school.

Hmm yeah you're right, a lot of the selectives aren't that great, I was just thinking of the ones I associate with. Well change that to often 1st in a low ranked school is not even average in a top 10 ranked school. And even then, not always!

Those are generalisations... An indivdiaul's intelligence and intellectual aptitude is dependant upon their efforts and dedication, not merely school rank.
As stated before, an individual from a low-ranked comprehensive school, if provided the opportunity, could rank 1st in a selective school.
It is really dependant upon the student, their effort and hard-work.
Yes, it is arduous to validate such generalisations.
