Yes it helps. But saving say $70k in your first year and then another $80k in your second year doesn't open up that much opportunities... What you think you're going to do in real estate with $150k hmm?

I've been there, done that, done it better than what most here aspire to do probably - you're aiming for a 94/95 ATAR, I got a 99.95. Got in to the banks you're talking about (GS, JPM etc), hit 1 or 2 boom years before the bust (the pay you'll probably see in IB will be nowhere near what people get in my days), moved on and did better elsewhere, probably have enough passive income to retire for life after just turning 27, but I won't settle until I hit $500m or at least try doing so.

What I can tell you from life experience is if you're just busting your chops to save a 100k or 200k and think it'll have a big impact, it probably isn't going to. Unless you're happy to settle for buying some of the $800k townhouses my consortium is looking at building on one of the pieces of land holdings in my real estate portfolio which you seem to think all ibankers have. The number of ibankers who don't even have an investment property at 30 will amaze you. I haven't bought anything sub $2m for 2 years now.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not here to judge. If some people have relatively modest aspirations that's fine. But don't be deluded in to thinking ib is something that's going to make you big bucks.
Well you have to start small don't you, not everyone can be investing in $2m + properties at such a young age like you but we all wish we could. You obviously had a significant amount of start out capital, no idea how but tell me and i'll do it !

I know this is the case, anyone who thinks the salaries will be back to how they were pre gfc is delusional

I do have to say though i am surprised how many ibankers you say don't have an investment property at 30, maybe they're wasting their money on living that outlandish style which every person thinks an ibanker lives (that models and bottles rubbish)

see dis is the thing

people wonder, if you need 100 man hours per week from 1 person, why not pay two people 60k and be done with it

doesn't roll that way

you need good people

but how do you keep good people?

make them addicted to the "lifestyle"

Yeah, doesn't really make much sense that a "baller" only investing in properties over $2m would go on a forum like this and talk to kids in high school lol...

how do people expect to save 70k in first year from a, at best 110k salary...while living in the CBD.

unless your parents have hooked u up with a cbd apartment, gl with that yo
An ibanker in my days makes around $95-105k base + 70-80% bonuses. Bonuses are probably around 40-50% now at a big bank so you'll end up with around $150-160k. After tax + super that's around $100k. If you can't save $70k from making $100k net you have some serious problems dude.

And why would you live in the CBD? I lived at home in my first year? Oh but you want to have a hoohah fancy lifestyle and imagine you're in LKF every day taking home people yea? Well maybe you won't save $70k then. I saved 95% of my 1st year income. Not everyone on BoS is a billionaire ibanker with homes. You probably qualify for neither of these 3 statements.

For someone who graduated HSC in 2010 and another who's aiming to get a 94 ATAR, you certainly are the experts at making big bucks.

agree. even if u were to live out of home, 30k is more than enough to live a good lifestyle. back when i was placed at the alfred, i was renting a newly built 1 bdrm apartment inner city (prahran, melbournians will know this is a nice suburb) for 250 a week. its probably grown a bit since then maybe 260/270 nowadays which still comes to 14k pa. that leaves u 16k to live on i.e. 600+ a fortnight which is actually excessive if u ask me as i was living comfortably off half of that per fortnight

yeah 30k works and its the correct way to avoid being dependent on banker pay, ie being a lifer

my expenses per year is about 20k and doesnt include rent.
this is sht like taxi to work, food (3 meals) and coffee and maybe 1 or 2 nicer meals per week
throw another 10k in for alcohol

obviously being a banker gives you some delusions of grandeur and you start buying random sht you really shouldnt buy (lotta girl bankers have an audi TT, lotta guy bankers have those adjustable savile row suits where you dont need a belt, multiple watches) and going on nice holidays and then bam you are broke nigga lol

happy new year im fkn hungover fkkk cant sleep

Exactly. I don't know what these kids are smoking. I spent $5k I think in my first year at ibank (living at home admittedly). I don't even have time to go out to drink and when I do I'm so tired I just wanted to sleep.

Let's see...
Jan-July: did nothing but work til 2am everyday, caught taxis home, dinners all paid for. Slept on weekends and thought about how much I hated working til 2am.
Jul-Sep: went to London for training, accommodation paid for, got $5k living allowance, was in class 9-5pm every day any way
Sep-Dec: did what I did best, work til 2am, having my pitchbook torn up by the VP

I don't have multiple watches, suits etc. I still buy from Jensen's in HK for suits every time I drop by HK. I don't wear watches. Why bother buying one unless you're going to spend $30k+ on an AP or PP? You (newbie) and I know a cr@ppy $5k omega wouldn't even get you in to the VIP area of Beijing Club. Who are people trying to impress with a $5k watch? Their cat? I'm only driving a new Merc E-series which I got extremely cheap (40% off retail as the 2013 model where the lights are recombined is rolling out soon). I'm wearing the same LV belt my gf got me when I was in uni.

Admittedly, my type of style would be frowned upon in your city newbie and I would probably be pressured to spend more and get some Zegnas, APs, A Testonis etc every so often and drive a Maserati. So that's one good thing about Australia - the need to keep up with the facade is minimised. Oh and I certainly didn't open 10 bottles of Doms last night for NYE. Just had some simple oysters, crabs, lobsters, 9+ marble wagyus which I got from wholesalers I know at 30% what people pay at a restaurant and fresher too.

As they say about ABCs though, 憎人富贵厌人穷.

Happy New Year!

No one, hence I don't buy one.

But if you do business in certain parts of of the world, sometimes small things like that are necessary.

Ever wonder why real estate agents drive luxury cars, especially when they sell expensive properties?

But how long did it take you to get to work? I think it would get annoying over time if you're working till 2am everyday and still have to travel home a fair distance if you lived far away.

We didn't say we were experts? Also, what's all this trashing about atar aims and the like? Sure you got .95 when you did you hsc and i'm only aiming for 94-95 compared to you, but what significance does your atar have after you're in uni?

Or...you could do ibanking just because you like the thrill, the type of work (IDK managerial/financial?? - Disclaimer I know nothing about ibanking) or just want to try it out?

Not everyone does medicine, law, ibanking just for the money. Sure, OP's question was how much do they earn, but I just wanted to point that out.

Ibanker sounds like an awful job....horrendous hours, boring work and high stress. Not worth the money in my opinion :/
