Im currently not in Sydney right now and I have some questions to ask, if you could please help me out:

1. I received an email from UNSW regarding the AAA scholarship (including the form). Just to be sure, can I simply print it out, complete it, scan it and email it back? Or do I have to physically send the form, either by mail or person?

2. I recently received my work roster and for the next month, I have work during my MGMT1001 lecture :/
Are the lectures for this subject posted online? Will I fall incredibly behind if I don't watch the lectures? Is it a difficult subject? Will reading the slides, attending the tutorials and reading any other relevant course work (e.g. textbooks) be enough to do well in this course?

I can always try to change my roster but because its a major job experience opportunity, I don't really want to make a bad impression :/

3. Can anyone give me some details about statistics as a major? I'm mainly asking this out of curiosity. I only did 3 unit maths but my marks in maths were my highest. Do you think this is sufficient enough to potentially achieve success in the major (including hard work and dedication)?

Kind Regards.

Either I think. But you're going to O-Week, right? Just go to the Scholarships office and send it in, in person - if you're going to be in the area soon. Just check there's no expiry date or anything on the form.

For least hassle for you, maybe just email them back and if they don't accept it - that just means you send it in person. No biggie.

Yes, in first year you have to do MATH1131/41, MATH1231/41 and MATH1081. But I'd suggest you take the Higher version just to challenge yourself - because I can tell you even with higher first year maths, the jump from first to second year was quite large.

In second year, you have to take Differential Equations, Several Variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis - and then two specific stats courses: Linear Models and Theory of Statistics. Again, take all of these at higher level to challenge yourself - if possible.

I found statistics very challenging, but my heart isn't in it - but I know others like it, and even excel in it.

Also what degree are you doing? Look at the Handbook entry for it here: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/specialisations/2013/Statistics.html . That'll give you a better indication.

1) I am not too sure with AAA as I didn't receive it.

2) Are you able to attend another MGMT1001 lecture? The lectures are not posted online however, lecture slides are, although some slides from the actual lecture won't be on the uploaded slides. I don't think you will fall behind if you catch up on readings. The MGMT1001 tutorial is a bit different to other courses. They cover additional stuff. The subject isn't that difficult. It's a bit of common sense stuff. I didn't attend many of my MGMT1001 lectures due to personal reasons, however, I did my tutorial work and read bits of the textbook and ended up with 80 for the course.

3) This I can't answer sorry. I did do ECON1203 which is alright.

Also, I got AAA. So my personal experience was: hand it in to the people in the Scholarship's office.

You can't hand the aaa form in on o-week because the due-date is a few days before. I'm going to hand mine in when I get my id card some time next week.

I've enrolled into Commerce/Economics which allows me to take three business majors. Lately though, I've seriously considered taking a mathematics major (like statistics) with my dual degree. I'm going to see how I feel about Econ1203 (business and economic statistics) before I make a final decision though. There is always the option of econometrics as well which combines economics + maths + statistics if I can't take a major outside the ASB.

Thank you every one for your answers, I really appreciate the help!

@Traiwit - I also received that email a while ago. I highly recommend that you contact the UNSW scholarships office just to confirm the details - Good luck!

Yes, you did. Just contact the Scholarships office to confirm what you have to do.

ECON1203? That isn't real maths like... at all - that's nothing compared to what real statistics is, so you can't base your decision based on that subject. Also may I ask how you take a maths major in Com/Eco? Mathematics is a Science major.

If you want to base what a mathematics/statistics major is on about, you have to take MATH1131/1231 or 1141/1241. Technically you have to take MATH2901 and 2931, but they require first year stuff.

Thank you for your answer. I know that in the economics degree you can take a second major in mathematics or statistics so I assumed you could do the same for the dual degree... I'll definitely email the uni though to confirm. http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2013/3543.html (that shows the handbook for the economics degree).

I would really like to take a maths subject next semester and if I like it, I'll definitely consider transferring to commerce/science. I would've chosen it in the first place but I don't if it will allow me to take 2 commerce majors and 1 science major without overloading ...

Thanks for the help!

You need to look at this: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2013/3521.html - because you're a double degree student.

Here, you see you can't take a major in Mathematics or Statistics.

It says however:

Please note: ECON1202 the following courses are adequate substitutes:MATH1031 orMATH1131 or
MATH1141 or MATH1151 .ECON1203 the following course is an adequate substitute:MATH1041. A student is also entitled to an exemption from the sequence ECON1202 and ECON1203 if s/he has successfully completed any one of the following complete sequences: MATH1131 /MATH1231 or MATH1141 /MATH1241 or MATH1151 /MATH1251 .

---

And with a double degree, you can only take two majors anyway. One from each.

And with Comm/Sci: https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/program_transfer/program_trans_ASB.html , you need 75 WAM (average mark) to be considered for a transfer.
