Hey,
I come from Caringbah (year 12) so if you'd like to know anything specific just inbox me/drop me a line. I saw some people mentioning that St George's science department was subpar? Yeah, well I don't do any sciences (Caringbah also doesn't offer senior sciences, no idea why) but most of my friends do either chem, phy, bio or all of the above and they've told me that our science department isn't amazing.
We are not offered Standard English so you HAVE to do English Advanced.
Also, I'm pretty sure this applies to most schools but people are more competitive since we dropped from 28 to 52 due to the year above us slacking off. Leashes have been tightened and whips are out. This is a good and bad thing, depending on how much outside motivation you need.
Btw, what rank is your school and are you at the top? If you're the number one in your school you might want to consider staying put to boost your atar.

Oh ok thanks. DO you think I have much of a chance of making it to any of the schools i want to apply for? umm, i wont be doing senior science, it'll be either chem and physics, or chem and bio. are the maths teachers any good? i want to choose 3 unit maths. my maths teachers are pretty useless, im stuck on my maths homework right now because my dumb teacher never explained it to us properly :/
=.=" ......my school.....hasnt been in the top 200 for a while...untill last year, we were 171 i think? anyway, most of the year 12s last year were smart, i can already tell when my grade sits HSC we definitely will not be in the top 200. No im not number one in my school but i'm near the top. I would never ever ever ever EVER dream of staying at my school for my senior years. Honestly the place is a joke :| im in the top class for everything and we barely do anything :( they never actually assign us homework and most days i just bludge and do nothing because there is nothing to do...i would revise stuff...if there was anything to revise. :| :'( i.must.leave.

Our maths teachers are good. I dropped maths but I can vouch for most of the maths teachers. One of them is absolutely excellent and the rest are pretty good.
We also have these Wednesday afternoon free for alls (Wednesday afternoon is school sport but it's optional for year 12s and there is a teacher from each faculty in the library to help you with anything you bring with you or to study in peace with others) if you have any trouble but usually you can ask for help during the lesson anyway. The teachers are really pushing harder recently anyway so they'll be happy with high achievers.
You sound like you have a high chance of being accepted by the schools you've mentioned. A LOT and by that I mean just under 10 people from my grade had successfully transferred to St George or Sydney with B range grades and not that much extra-curricular activities. You sound like someone who'd be a great asset. Actually looks like you would get into St George (they're higher ranked/your first choice) so it looks like you're set.

sorry i didn't read the whole thread
which school do you go to now?
where are you applying this year?
hey there
umm ill pm you my school cos i dont want the whole world to know,,
im thinking of applying for:
1. St George Girls High
2. Sydney Girls High
3. Hurlstone Ag.
4. Maybe a partially selective school like Tempe or Macquarie FIelds. I will only apply for them if they keep their selective and non selective streams separate for yr 11 and 12 otherwise there is no point. I know that sefton mix them up in yr 11 and 12 so i wont apply there, but i dont know about Tempe or Mac Fields.

Actually I was thinking... Should i not bother about applying at a partially selective and instead apply at north sydney girls? Im not sure what i should do anymore. :/ would it be better if it was 1.St George Girls 2. Sydney Girls 3. North Sydney Girls 4. Hurlstone ? or 1. St George Girls 2. Sydney Girls 3. Hurlstone 4. Partially selective ? or 1. St George Girls 2. Sydney Girls 3. North Sydney Girls4. Partially selective. does the order of preference make a big difference or not? Because last year my dad put Sydney girls as first when really i wanted st george as first but i didnt make it to either of them.. ahhh idk anymore ><
Also, how do schools work out what to give you in your report (as in High, sound, outstanding etc) Is it only based on your rank in the class? or only on your marks? or is it based on a bit of both or one more than the other?

^ I don't think preference really matters. I put St George Girls as 3rd preference and still got in. But put the schools in order of what you REALLY want to get into.

There isn't much of a point trying out for partially selective school because they mix the students together. But I know in Macquarie Fields the non-selective kids aren't allowed to do extension courses and they have to get above 90 to be able to do advanced soo yer. There's some separation there, but it really depends what you want to study in Year 11 and 12.

thats cool! i really want to get into st george so im defs putting it as first...even though now i dont think ill make it anywhere :( im begining to lose hope... i hope i can make it somewhere.. just gotta pull through these exams,...but not feeling confident about them at all >.< starting to question myself as to whether im good enough for a selective school too :/
ive decided im not trying for a partially selective, theres really no point. wow thats a bit of a put down isnt it? not being able to do extension and advanced courses if your not part of the selective stream :/ what if you're bright, and want to do the courses but didnt exactly get above 90? that really is kind of slack..

Well from what I've read, you should get into St. George pretty easily haha, I mean I go to Tech and we got like 20-30 new guys in Year 11, and a few of them are from Hurstville Boys so yeah.

Tech in comparison isnt as gr8 as a counterpart.
Fite?

oh thats cool, hopefully st george accept around 20 new girls. my dad went to tech :3 i feel so left out cos i dont go to a selective, even his brother and sister went to selective. his brother 2 years older than him went to Tech, his sister who is younger went to St George. hopefully I make it to at least St George, but idk how my half yearly report is going to turn out...so far my marks have been just above average, nothing special, with english dropping to around average i think O.O
If i dont make it there, i think I might apply for Georges River Senior College, anyone heard of it? how is its reputation? i dont know much about it. i just want to leave my school, dont want to stay there next year.

Wow that's some family hahaha, oh well best of luck!! Georges River Senior Campus as in Oatley? I have a couple of friends that go there. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend it, unless your current school is THAT bad. One friend of mine who couldn't make it to St George ended up going to Danebank, have you heard of it?

Yes it is a bit of a let down for those genuinely smart kids...

Anyhow, from what you've posted, I'm pretty certain you'll get into St George, so don't put yourself down :)

Don't worry, you'll be fine. St. George accepts ~25 new people every year. Plus, quite a few people leave for other schools in year 11, which adds to the number of vacancies.

OP,
You seem to fixate on selective and partial selective a lot. By personal opinion, I reckon school ranks and school environment is far more important than whether its selective or not. Ranks I think give a better indication of how strong a school is with their teachers and cohort. Now I'm not saying that ranks completely define the school, but it should be a consideration. As with school environment, you should ask students who have been to the the schools you want about the teaching faculties and anything else you want to know.
As with partially selective schools, I believe most mix their cohort up in the senior years, but you will see either dominating selectives or non-selective classes depending on what subjects you choose. With mine, our school decided that for those who want to do the 'harder' subjects (Adv English, any extensions and the sciences) you must meet a certain criteria and this heavily divided our classes. With the subjects I've seen you say you want to do, those tend to be dominated with selectives, especially in the stronger partially selective schools.
But with what you have posted, I'm pretty sure you'll make it to St. George and not have to worry about this.
And also, looking at how you described your school, you should prepare for the huge academic jump you may find when you go into a stronger school.
Best of Luck with your schools :D

I actually want a better learning environment. My school is absolute crap and 3/4 of my year are idiots (that is not an exaggeration) i go to an all girls school and ive never seen girls more immature than the ones that go to my school. nobody is competitive and i just want to go somewhere better. plus my school rank isnt that good either =.=
aha ok, if i make it.. im sure that it will be a better environment and yes, probably a huge academic jump :L
thank you! :)
