I don't really have a clue on this sort off stuff, but if you come first in all your subjects from a low ranking school and get internal marks like in the 70s, is it possible to get an ATAR 90+? Let the subjects be English Advanced, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths (2U & 3U).

Maybe the accuracy herein can be confirmed, but to my understanding:

Marks do not mean anything. The school that you are attending could simply be setting hard exams and assignments, and the unfairness in this compared to the rest of the state is equalized through the medium of the HSC exam.

It is all about the ranks.

If you are ranked 10/20

You get the 10th highest external mark as your internal, while keeping your own external exam mark. Everyone keeps their own external mark. This is then averaged, producing the final HSC mark.

Internals are moderated with accordance to your cohorts performance in the external exam. If your first mark was 70, and the first mark in the external exam was 95, that would be given as the first's (internal) mark, while first also keeps their own external mark (whether first was the one that achieved the 95 is irrelevant - as they receive the highest external mark as their internal, while still keeping their own external). Same averaging principle applies.

Really, the externals are critically important to do well in, as they have the chance to provide substantiation to the internal marks, and moderate them accordingly, or could bring them down profoundly!

You oversimplify how they moderate the internal marks.

The only way internal marks matter is how close they are to everyone else as this affects moderation.

Say you're rank 2nd with an internal mark of 80, whereas the person coming 1st has an internal mark of 100. The moderation process will lead to you having a much lower internal mark than the person coming 1st, despite being ranked 2nd.

Now if both of you had similar internal marks not differing by much, maybe 95 (you - 2nd) and 97 (them - 1st), the difference between the moderated internal marks won't be that great (maybe 1 or 2 marks).

Essentially what the BOS are trying to do is to maintain those same gaps between the unmoderated internal marks of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. with the moderated internal marks.

I understand.

So in classes where the internal mark may be 60's or 70's tops, are these people inhibited from attaining a band 6? Or is it all dependent on their performance in the external exams.

Some classes have extremely harsh marking, unnecessary specificity etc

Internal marks are only important because they determine internal ranks. Getting 60s or 70s in internals does not mean you are prevented from getting a band 6. :)
