I have a pretty good idea of what subjects I want to do for years 11 and 12 but just a few inquiries that I was wondering if anyone could help with.
Firstly, is there much difference between Studies of Religion I and II?
Secondly, I'm currently an A student in the maths 5.3 pathway, should I have any difficulties doing Ext 1 Maths?
Finally, which subject would you suggest? Modern History or Legal Studies?
I'm probably going to be completing my degree in commerce after school so legal studies would be more beneficial in that sense but is it that much of a help?

At this stage my subjects look as follows:
Adv. English
Ext 1 Maths
SOR II
Business Studies
Economics
Modern History/Legal Studies

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

If you're doing that well in 5.3, Extension 1 shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep your work ethic consistent.

The primary difference between SOR 1 and SOR 2 is workload. SOR 1 is a one unit subject, while SOR 2 is a two unit subject. Therefore, the content that is covered in SOR 2 is much more significant than in SOR 1. Both subjects follow similar structures, and they study the same religions (i.e Christianity, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism and Judaism). Additionally, the scalings are relatively similar and only vary by a little year to year.

As for Modern History or Legal Studies, the first thing to consult is the lines. Are the allocated time slots conflicting, or are both subjects on different lines? This is the most important aspect of subject selection.
Also have a look at course content - which interests you more? An insight into how the legal system in Australia affects us as citizens and how we are involved within it, or the impacts of events in the 20th century including the World and Pacific Wars, and Australia's ties with the United States and other countries? Scalings of these two subjects are almost identical, with Modern History in a very slight lead (an almost insignificant lead!) for last year's HSC.

Even if you end up doing Commerce at University, legal studies won't be that beneficial

Just do the subject you are more interested in

As for Ext.1 maths, agree with OzKo, you'll be fine as long as you work consistently.

Thank you to all. I think I will do Ext 1 Maths which means I will also have to do SOR II, at least for my prelim year anyway. As for my social science dilemma, I'm cautious about picking modern history in case I get depth studies that don't interest me. Thanks for your help, I will continue to look into it :)

Talk to whoever is taking Modern History next year and ask what exactly is going to be taught next year. You can then see if those topics interest you and if it is worthwhile doing the subject.
