Say that two students, one doing MATHS1141 (Higher Maths 1A) and one doing MATHS1131 (Maths 1A) and both got 80%, would the student doing MATHS1141 get a higher mark (like thru scaling or something) than the student doing MATHS1131. Or in other words is there scaling like HSC ??

Also whats the difference in difficulty levels between them

1. Scaling exists.

2. People said there's not much different in learning content. However, there's extra questions in the final test that is a lot harder. Don't quote me on <<.

3. UNSW recommends this on MATH1141 page:

If your combined marks for HSC Mathematics Ext 1 and Ext 2 are less than 176, you should consider enrolling in MATH1131 instead.

Yeah, if those are the raw percentages, then the MATH1141 student will almost certainly achieve a higher mark than the MATH1131 student. Definitely not lower though.

If you can get 80% in MATH1141, I'd say that would be HD.

The difficulty is rather significant, IMO. MATH1141 covers more and that content is harder - maybe the difference between 2U and 4U for just that extra content - the rest is the same. But that is accommodated by the scaling involved.

Hey thanks for the response :) how about the differences between phys1121 and phys1131 with regards to their difficulty. I think that HSC physics is completely different to Uni physics as hsc physics is a pile of crap

they're exactly the same except the final for 1131 has more questions

There is are common questions for both MATH1131 and MATH1141 in the final exam, and this accommodates the scaling.

Also the UNSW recommendation is... bleh. If you feel you are up to the task, and did MX2, there is no reason to take MATH1131.

There is scaling, but is it enough to warrant difference in difficulty. That's the question lol.
