Yes, the HSC exam = Average of Assessment mark (Based on your rank and cohort's performance) and Examination mark (Your performance only)

can someone clarify how ranks will affect HSC mark?
Assessment mark is based on your rank, where if you are 4th, you will receive the 4th highest mark of your cohort. Since the assessment mark is half your final hsc mark, this is why ranks will affect half your hsc.

Depends on the performance of your cohort. For example, for average schools, you have top and bottom students. Due to this, the marks will spread a lot, particularly the middle. If you have average ranks your assessment mark ONLY, can either shift up or down, depending on the relative gaps between the students. Hence, if there are downies who your marks might be close to, you can possibly get your assessment mark dragged down and affect half your hsc mark, even though you smashed the external. Hence, if you help the downies and boost their marks, this would also boost your marks too.

The bolded bit is incorrect, that's only true for first and last places. If you're ranked 4th, your assessment mark will be the 4th highest, but you won't receive the 4th highest external mark as your internal mark. Your assessment mark will be calculated by the relative difference (internal marks) between you and your cohort

If you have average ranks during year 12 and do good in the hsc then your assessment mark will be average while your external marks will be good and your final mark will be calculated using the average of your assessment + external marks.

Whoops, I forgot about the relative gaps
