it doesnt really depend on what uni you go to. your social life is what you make of it
^^

You're going to be basement/anti social at any uni, going to a certain uni won't change that. The main advantage of USYD/UNSW is the greater variety of societies and clubs, i'd strongly recommend you join a club as you'll meet liked minded people passionate about the same hobby.

Well said.

Tbh, you can find many things to do at any uni. Every uni will have their societies for your niche areas of interest. There's even stuff like quidditch competitions, sport festivals, parties, etc. Usually for things involving sports they will have competitions between different unis too.

Like I even get the chance to make designs for a race car and its damn pretty cool.

Other than that, you can find people which you will spend the next 4 or 5 years with at uni. I've already found quite a large group of us doing the same program and I'll be seeing them a few times a week for the next few years at uni. And we usually discuss about work and keep constant reminders and stuff too. We also pretty much chill at uni all the time (and sometimes out of uni too). I guess this part of making good friends is one of the easier ones if you can find those who attend the same lectures and tutorials and stuff with you. Don't be afraid to talk and introduce yourself!!!

Something as simple as "What do you study?" is good enough as an introduction, then maybe a handshake or whatever and then the convo unfolds.

So social life is what you make of it. And also, regarding the claims about everyone at UNSW being asian, not all my friends are asian :p

I have quite a good mix of friends who have grown up in Australia with backgrounds from all over the world (except maybe the Americas and Antarctica, but then again that's not the stereotype in question here :haha:).

I have met people from the Americas, though have not become friends with one I met from uni.

uni can be a bit of a revolving door of friends in that unless you're doing a specialised degree, you end up having different people in your tutes each semester.

joining a club or society is a great way to meet like-minded people, as has been mentioned above. You're also more likely to see them on a regular basis as most clubs hold regular events.

Being intentional in making friends and being friendly is the best tip I can give you. Even if you're shy, it's worth saying hi to people in the first few weeks especially, because everyone is in the same boat and don't necessarily know many people.

JCU is Australia's bogan hub.

Kind, accepting, down-to-earth bogans who are very social and love having a good time.

Yeah, uni students don't tend to be dicks speaking from experience.

In all honesty, people are the most chill during this period.

I reckon (well at UNSW anyway) you meet a lot of people you know of rather than being good friends with them (like seeing them at parties or hanging out with them out of uni once or twice to play pool/get food). Like I probs consider only 3-4 people that I've met from uni to be good friends.

+ a lot of people tend to stick with their group of friends from high school

But it's really easy to start a convo with anything about what they're studying/what they wanna do in the future so you can do that if that's your thing.

A man can try taste the different flavours of the world. I pack a fair bit of heat so I think I'll be alright. The Indian's will enjoy that huhehe.

My social life at uni namely consists of going to either the pub or the coffee shop across the road with a few mates...

Most uni events are terrible (Namely, because even the people you hate go to them)... although, some have been pretty awesome...

Best friends, probably not... good friends, (friends you would go out with, have fun, keep in touch with out of school, etc) certainly...

If you go the USYD's Cumberland/Lidcombe campus, it's pretty much like high school - same size/vibe, how you have a smallish-sized cohort, and how you get to see people on a regular basis. Of course it doesn't look that appealing initially, but it grows on you and I'd consider it to be cosy. Good mix of ethnicities too (plenty of Asians and non-Asians around who are all kind, friendly people).

The main downside to the campus is the lack of societies and interest groups (total of about 8 with half of them relating to religion) and the fact that we'll be relocating to main campus in a couple of years.
