The parents of Tori Johnson, the Lindt Chocolat Cafe manager who was shot dead in the Martin Place siege, have released a statement paying tribute to their "beautiful boy".

"We are so proud of our beautiful boy Tori, gone from this earth but forever in our memories as the most amazing life partner, son and brother we could ever wish for," the 34-year-old's parents said in a statement.

"We feel heartfelt sorrow for the family of Katrina Dawson.

"We'd like to thank not only our friends and loved ones for their support, but the people of Sydney; Australia and those around the world for reaching out with their thoughts and prayers.

"Our deepest gratitude to the NSW police, armed forces and paramedics for their tireless efforts.

"We ask that the media respects our privacy in this difficult time.

"Let us all pray for peace on earth."

SW Coroner Michael Barnes has released a statement following the Lindt cafe siege, which in part reads:

"The bodies of the three persons will be examined at the Glebe mortuary by a forensic pathologist who will provide a report to the state coroner concerning the cause and the manner of their deaths.

"The NSW Police Force has declared a 'critical incident'. The Homicide Squad has been tasked with conducting a full investigation of the deaths at the Lindt cafe.

"An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act as these deaths occurred in the course of a police operation. The state coroner will conduct an inquest as soon as is reasonably practicable.

"At this early stage the state coroner is not in a position to identify the issues that will be considered at the inquest."

A sad day. Of course this occurs nearly every day in certain countries on the other side of the world, but of course Australia is more important.

Felt the Police Force/authorities could have dealt with this MUCH BETTER. All the retarded terrorist wanted was for an ISIS flag to be displayed and then he would release 1 hostage. He would release a further 5 if he could contact the PM. Why couldn't these conditions be met if the Police were actually concerned about the safety of the hostages first?

The Police force did a good job, but definitely not a great one by no means. 1 man with a shot gun was able to bring 100s and 100s and 100s of Police in all their divisions. 1 man? The Police basically stood there for 17 hours. Why couldn't they bring in an Islamic leader to have a conversation with the terrorist? The Australian Police definitely have some improvement to do. This could have ended with no deaths.

Since we're in Australia, this does affect us significantly more. If the media was to talk about all the terrorist activities happening throughout the world, we'd need a separate 24/7 channel just for that. And please, tell us about how you know more about people who specialise in this kind of activities. Also tell us more about how you know everything that the police attempted to do.

At least some media outlets are acknowledging this terrorist guy's mental health issues, and his past history (He killed his own wife) and aren't unnecessarily associating him with Islam.

However it is no surprise that a Wahabbi Sunni is once again seeking to sow terror by these terrorist activities. The same people (Saudi Arabia) that the US supports. Iran and the Syrian Government (Assad) are one to one up against these brutal animals (who are in the form of ISIS, Saudi Arabia and other stupid Sunni terrorist organisations.). But the US and the West do not support Iran and the Syrian Government, yet support Saudi Arabia. Something to be mindful of...

You start off by saying that mental issues played a large role in this occurrence, then you go on to say it's actually because of the United States. If there's one thing to be mindful of, it's that you shouldn't contradict yourself (even if it's indirect). I believe so, since it was reported the lights were off, and they began to fire a volley of bullets at the perpetrator. Probably hostages were caught in the crossfire. If the Lindt café manager had managed to retrieve the gun and ended the perpetrator's life, I think all this would of ended peacefully.

So I did some research, turns out he was a travel agent in iran who promised many passengers visas and then fled the country to australia with all their money. He then lied to Australian authorities saying his family was being held in Iran and he would be tortured if they sent him back to Iran and hid his crimes and was granted a visa as a political refugee. Apparently the Iranian government told the australian government about his crimes and even interpol was involved but the australian authorities refused to hand him back. He stole an equivalent of $200k back in 1996 which would have been a LOT of money back then.

AUSTRALIA’s most senior Muslim cleric, the Grand Mufti, has joined Muslim community leaders in condemning the Sydney siege.
Professor Ibrahim Abu Mohammed called the actions of the hostage taker — who has brandished an Islamic flag adopted by jihadists known as The Black Standard — as a “criminal act”.
“(We) have been devastated by the recent news that (has) been circulated in the media agencies about the reported hostage incident unfolding in Martin Place,” he said in a statement.

“The Grand Mufti and the Australian National Imams Council condemn this criminal act unequivocally and reiterate that such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam.
“We along (with) the wide Australian society await the results of the investigation about the identity of the perpetrators and their underlying motivations behind this criminal act.
“(We) express (our) full support and solidarity with the victims and their families and aspire to a peaceful resolve to this calamity.”
The crowd surrounding the Lindt cafe, where an unknown gunman took up to 50 hostages just before 10am, has at times gotten rowdy, with people trying to stir up emotions by yelling insults about the prophet Muhammad. At least five hostages have since escaped.

Muslim community leader Jamal Rifi has also spoken out.
Dr Rifi told The Daily Telegraph that Sydney’s Muslim community was in shock that the terrorist had brandished an Islamic flag and said the prayers of the community were with the hostages.
“The reaction from the Muslim community is shock. It is terrifying, and shocking that an Islamic symbol has been used,” he said.
“We know it’s early but Muslim community is as shocked and condemn this as any other Australian citizen. We are hoping and praying that this resolves without the loss of innocent life.
“We have always worked on the assumption that we have to be united in preventing any terror attacks taking place on Australian soil.
“Unfortunately our greatest fear has been realised with what we have seen today … and if, and it is a big if, these people comes to be from our ranks … we will disown them the same way we disown such actions wherever they take place.”

The New York Police Department is deploying at least one counter terrorism expert to Sydney to assist with the investigation into the siege at Martin Place that left two hostages and a gunman dead.

Police in New York have also stepped up counter terrorism security to monitor potential targets in the world’s financial capital in case there are follow up attacks against Australian allies.

Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence & Counter-terrorism of the NYPD, John Miller, said on Monday evening that authorities had “deployed resources” to possible targets, such as the Australian Consulate-General in New York and Lindt chocolate shops in Manhattan.

A NYPD spokesman said there had been no specific terrorist threats against New York.

Mr Miller also revealed a NYPD counter-terrorism expert was being sent from Singapore to Sydney, to assist the NSW Police and Australian Federal Police with their investigations.

“We are in close contact with officials in Australia and are constantly monitoring the situation,” Deputy Commissioner Miller said.

News of the attack at the Lindt chocolate shop in Sydney’s Martin Place dominated American news coverage on Monday. Television stations, radio and newspapers featured images and news of the events as they unfolded.

The White House said the US had offered assistance and support to Australia, spokesman Josh Earnest said.

President Barack Obama was briefed by his chief counter terrorism advisor, Lisa Monaco.

In New York, critical response vehicles are paying extra attention to certain areas in the city that are potential targets for follow up attacks.

New York was the main target of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed about 3000 people. Commercial airliners were hijacked by Middle East terrorists and flown into the World Trade Centre.
