Basically a picture of a town that relies on a river for it's water supplies, agriculture land, and a car battery factory.

Question: Identify ONE chemical species that could be a contaminant of the water supply.

I want to say lead, because car batteries consist of lead, and lead is a heavy metal, but is it safer to say sulfuric acid as it can make the water more acidic? What should I put as an answer?

Or should I say phosphate as run-off from agriculture contain phosphates and nitrates?

Lead's good. If you need examples, a quick 'lead poisoning' search in the google news section is sufficient
