Given that we were discussing differentiating, it is extremely unlikely we would want to differentiate an expression involving variable eccentricity with respect to the eccentricity.
We would have to be asked to examine the rate at which some property of the ellipse is changing as e changes.

That's not that strange to think about, e.g. how does the distance between the directrix and focus change as the eccentricity changes, or something.

Yes, it's a possibility, but it hasn't been seen yet.
