Depends.

On the intercity trains with the purple chairs and with a seat configuration of 2/2 I go top, always. Because the old people who want seats will want to go down rather than up.

On the other more modern trains (both intercity and suburban) I go whichever one is furthest way from the open doors. Because less people will enter on that side.
