So we can't use something such as sqrt(16) = 4
Or sqrt(32) = 4sqrt(2) ------> this case, z would have to be 2, not 32, using what glittergal said

It can still be real. At your point in the course I don't think you've touched complex numbers yet.
Real numbers are basically anything that have no imaginary part, so pi and sqrt(3) etc. count.
