How do I solve this trig equation?

tan^2 (x) + tan(x) - 2 = 0 ; 0=<theta=<360

(x) is actually a theta.


I got an answer of tan(x)=2 and -1, but not sure what to do with this answer afterwards. Or if it's even correct.

theta=,180n + arctan(2), where n is an integer

and

theta = 180n + 145, where n is an integer

(General solutions are necessary if theta is not specified within a range of values.)

If you don't get it, use the tan inverse function on your calculator on the values -1 and 2.

You'll get -45 degrees, which is the same as 135 degrees (due to related angles), and around 63 degrees.

But since tan is positive in the first and 3rd quadrant, if you keep adding or taking away 180 degrees from the values above, you'll still be at the same answer e.g. tan(135+180) = tan135 = -1.

Hence why I wrote the answers as general solutions above.

Sorry the range of values are 0 to 360 degrees. It cut off that part in my post for some reason.

Yup, that makes it easier. The solutions are:

theta = 135 degrees, 315 degrees, 243 degrees

Thanks, I got a decimal for tan^-1(2). I understand what to do with the 45 answer. But what do I do with that decimal answer?

Press the [o' ''] button on your calculator (above the ENG button on my). It converts decimals to degrees/minutes/seconds.

Yet the answers show that -45 has been used in the positive quadrants for tan. And 63 in the negative quadrants. Why is this? Wouldn't it be the other way around?

You've made a mistake while solving the quadratic. You should get:

(tan^2(theta) + 2)(tan(theta)-1)=0

Which works out to be:

tan(theta) = 1

tan(theta)=-2

Also when you're doing general solution make sure NOT to remember the formula and derive it yourself (takes 2 seconds).
