Ok so i was wondering about how the examination mark is determined. Say a guy in school A gets 60% in the bio exam, and another guy in school B gets 60% as well. Do they both end up with the same exam mark?

Yes. It is the internal marks that will vary, depending on internal ranks and overall performance of the cohort.

So why do people say if you come first internal, you end up with the first external mark?

If you come first internally, your 'internal mark' is the highest examination mark achieved by your cohort. Your examination mark is whatever you get in the final exam.

You end up with the first external mark as your INTERNAL mark.

Guy A (ranked internally first) gets 60% in his EXTERNAL HSC exam. Guy B gets 90% in his EXTERNAL HSC exam.

Guy A's internal mark will be 90%, as he has taken the highest EXTERNAL HSC mark as his INTERNAL mark ^^^. But his external mark will be his own, 60%.
