I said this in the UNSW Reviews thread and I have received a few PMs from people on how this is possible so I am guessing quite a few people are wondering about this.However it is possible to accelerate an engineering degree plus computer science or commerce down to 4.5 years by doing some stuff in the summer

Basically the steps for planning your degree are
1. Complete the common/core courses (MATH1XY1, PHYS11X1, etc)
2. Start with your breadth subjects for your degree (Level 1/2) for the prerequisites for later courses (MMAN2100, MTRN2500, etc)
3. Start doing the depth subjects/professional electives (MECH3110, MANF4611, COMP3331, etc)
4. graduate (hopefully)
The key is to take advantage of courses in the summer to speed up your degree
In first year mechatronic engineering, the core courses stated in the above document are: ENGG1000, PHYS1121, MATH1131, MATH1231, COMP1917, MMAN1300, MATH1231 and 2 first year electives. The other first year courses that need to be completed (at a later stage) is ELEC1111. Also, MTRN2500 is the next level course for your breath subject which has COMP1511 as a prerequisite so we need to make sure that COMP1917 is completed before MTRN2500 is started.
Also looking at the computer science side, most of the subjects overlap except for COMP1927 so this need to be completed as well
So one way to do this would be:
1st year, Semester 1
- ENGG1000
- MATH1131
- COMP1917
- PHYS1121
- MMAN1300
- MATH1231
- MTRN2500
- COMP1927
- MINE1010
- General Education Course
Since MINE1010 is offered in the summer, it can be completed them plus a general education course which is a requirement of the degree. (now you are 2 courses ahead)
The 2nd year is completing the next stage of your program. The courses from the mechatronic side are: MTRN2500(which we have already completed), MMAN2130, MMAN2400, MATH2019, MATH2089, MMAN2100, MMAN2300, ELEC2141 and COMP2121. From the computer science side, we have to complete COMP2041, COMP2911 and COMP2121 (which overlaps with the mechatronic requirement).
The second year can look something like this:
2nd year, Semester 1
- MATH2019
- MMAN2400
- ELEC2141
- COMP2121
- MMAN2300
- MATH2089
- COMP2041
- MMAN2100
- ELEC1111
- General Education Course
At this point, by completing 2 subjects in both summers, you are essentially one semester ahead in your degree. You just need to organise your remaining subjects into whether they are available in semester 1 or 2 and complete them then. You can also chose to do full time load for the remainder of your degree or you can do 3-4 subjects a semester from here on in and still finish your degree "on time".
This can be done with other double degree combinations as well like mechanical engineering/commence, BEME, BE/MBioEng, etc.
Notes:
1. You can UNSW Business Subjects in the Summer but keep in mind you need to pay 4 times as much so it is up to you whether it is worth it
2. From 2019 UNSW will be introducing trimesters (probably) so this won't work then but in essence it is the same thing as above.
3. In later years, courses are not run in the summer because class sizes are already small as they are.
