Law + ATAR (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone,
Could someone please help me with questions regarding law and the required atar?

1.Has anyone ever been accepted into law even though their atar was lower than the published required atar? (excluding any schemes)
If so when and which uni?

2.Regarding law at ANU the atar has risen during the past recent years.In the published uac book with all the courses it says the cut off is 97. This year is the first year that the atar is 98 (meaning that you can't use bonus points to get into law at ANU this was announced April 2016). Do you think it is possible to get in if you are under the atar?

3.is it possible that after the atar is released unis would lower or raise the cut off?
If so when and which uni?

4.Say if i can't do law during first year. What are the alternate pathways to law at USYD and UNSW?

Don't do law but know many people who do; we are not admission officers so take this with a grain of salt

1. Yes, with the exception of GO8 (especially USYD)

2. Possibly, if there are many vacancies

3. It will fluctuate, but not significantly as it will depend on availability and competitiveness.

The ATAR for UNSW/USYD will likely be a lot lower than 99.7 (or whatever their previous cutoff is) because of LSAT.

If you didn't do LSAT then you can't receive offer from UNSW/USYD

It's LAT, and that is only for UNSW. The cutoff will be more lenient if you do better in the LAT, but since it's so competitive, I guess you would need to do good in both anyways.

The ATAR for all courses is generally based upon a combination of course difficulty, coupled with the quality of applicants (ATAR's) and the number of positions available at the university. As such, yes it is possible to get in under the ATAR in some cases if not enough spaces were filled by the applicants that met the ATAR requirement.

Alternatively however, this could mean that if a great number of candidates applied for the course that exceeded the ATAR requirement and filled up the spots, it is possible that just meeting the required ATAR would not suffice. Therefore, yes it is possible, though this depends on a number of varying factors and is in general, unlikely.

If you do not meet the ATAR requirement for your chosen university, I think that it would be best to do the law degree at another university and try to maintain a distinction average for a transfer to your desired university, though this will not necessarily be guaranteed either. However, in this case you can be assured that you are completing the law degree even if you can't transfer rather than doing an alternate degree at your university of choice with no guarantee that you will be able to perform well enough to transfer to the law degree regardless.

However, do note that you will need to at least receive a 'High Score' in the LAT and get an ATAR that is equal to or exceeds 95 to even be considered for UNSW, or will need an ATAR at around 99.5 for USYD (though LAT isn't necessary).
