I've been hearing about people choosing WAM booster subjects but how does that work? Say for example, my degree is in Engineering; how would I pick WAM boosters if there are certain subjects I must complete? Do first years even have the option to pick WAM boosters? Do people pick these later on (i.e. third or fourth year) when there are options to pick electives such that they boost their WAM?

After your first year you have the option of choosing subjects known as "electives" which could be any subject of your choice (some times you may need approval by your faculty if the subject is not under the umbrella of Engineering e.g. Languages or Biomedical Sciences). WAM boosters are subjects that are known to be easy, and not every subject can be a WAM booster, so choose carefully and ask other students within your faculty to see what electives they may do.

Alternatively, ask on USYD confessions to see what electives people recommend as WAM boosters.

Thanks for the info. In terms of picking electives, would picking an "easy subject" over something that may be more difficult hinder my overall knowledge within the Engineering field? Let's say for example I pick a subject as a WAM booster that is irrelevant to engineering instead of something more related to Engineering, would I be disadvantaged in terms of "Engineering knowledge"?

Hope that question makes sense lol.

No, you won't be disadvantaging yourself since there's a reason why they offer you the chance to choose an elective of your choice, it's for you to decide what you want to do (to either expand your current knowledge or broaden your expertise in other areas). With that said, you could still find WAM boosters within the Engineering field if you look hard enough.
