i moved from a low ranked selective school to a top 20 one this year,, and i'm not coping

i used to be at least top 5-10 for everything at my old school and my ranks are so bad now

im doing both ext, bio, phys, eco. im dropping phys (coming bottom half for it) and my ranks for bio are okay, ext eng is meh and math is really bad

- i was so good at it up to yr 10 and now i'm failing !

got my eco results back and i got 11/20 bc i didn't put any effort in. i'm good at eng tho!!

i think i'm definitely burnt out, and honestly i'm questioning my abilities

how do i study, and how can i get out of a slump? any help would be great ! thank you :)

I dont think you are failing, you are just competing against other stronger students, which you would not have been used to since you were in a lower ranked school. If you put in the effort, and match your classmates in terms of being in top of homework, and study, you should easily be able to raise your ranks to top 5-10 even in your new school.

You just need to recognise the fact that no one is simply gifted with knowledge, and ace tests without studying; the amount of effort and time you put into your studying is going to be indicative of your results. I know there are people who say they don't study and end up getting first in the grade, which would make you think that you are inferior and incapable of matching their levels, but these people actually study and probably sacrifice more than you do, you must be aware of this.

Instead of gloating on your failed exams and thinking about how inadequate you are, you should be working harder towards achieving your goals and believe in yourself.

You've got this!

Take time for breaks! Maintaining your mental health is just as important as overloading the brain is detrimental to academic ability and leads to burn outs.

Avoid studying late nights and all nighters. Take time to relax, watch tv, enjoy your hobbies, rest and recover before you sleep.

Also writing down plans, to-do lists, anything to help with organising tasks reduces decision fatigue when deciding or remembering what to do.

Legit everyone in my cohort does this. It seems to be a common trait in competitive schools. I go to a top 40 selective school and friends from my school and other top schools do this lying bs. I really don't get why people gloat how little effort they put in...

It's ridiculous!

Because to get into selective schools you need to do the selective test which 99% of students (who want to go selective) go to tutoring for during primary.

And then when it comes to the HSC, which is what counts, you just... don't study? Don't go tutoring? And manage to get top grades?

Sadly, some students actually believe them which demoralises them :(

Yeah, these types of students ruins the cohort. It's this competitive nature that makes a toxic learning environment. Heck, not even learning but memorising and "hacking" their way to get high marks.

Sure, aiming high is desirable but it's this attitude that makes school more of a competition and a battle.

There's many things unfair about school competitiveness, that's my mini rant.
