I was just looking around on the webside, and I just dont really understand why alignment occurs. They do moderation and scaling, isnt that enough? And it seems like for most subjects, regardless of the mark, the claimed raw mark to aligned mark always shoots up, like ALWAYS. How would that even work, narrowing the spread of marks to would just make it harder to differentiate.

I was talking to a friend who completed last year, she said in math advanced she reckons a raw 92, and she got 90, her trial mark was around about 91 and she predicted that she would get 91. Idk this just seems confusing as to why it happens regardless of what subject it is, and regardless if they get a 90 raw or a 40 raw, always seems to move up.

92 raw is like 96 lol.

externals marks pretty harshly and no room for arguing.

alignment makes scores prettier lol.
scaling brings stuff down. moderation forms your internal marks.

raw marks -> NESA, UAC
the two do different things. NESA gives you subject scores, UAC calculates your ATAR.
NESA aligns scores to determine band 6's.
UAC scales scores to form your aggregate and ATAR.

i see, i had a look on the UAC report in 2019, it said this
"Raw HSC marks, rather than NESA’s reported HSC marks, are used in the scaling process. A student’s raw HSC mark in a course is the average of their raw examination mark and their raw moderated school assessment. These marks are not reported to students".
So looking at the massive jump of a raw 80 m-ext 2 going to a 94 seems pointless?

And the same report also says this:
"Why can’t I use my HSC marks to check the calculation of my ATAR?
There are two reasons. The first is the ATAR is a rank that indicates your position in relation to other students; it is not an average mark. Secondly, raw marks are used in the calculation of the ATAR, not the aligned HSC marks."
So that means you cant plug in aligned marks into hsc calculators because its the raw mark which gets scaled and then turned into atar?
So to get an atar above like 99.7 or something, you need to get everything in the low-mid 90s, RAW??

Obviously the NESA formula is really complicated and you can't exactly predict your atar, but you can get a rough estimate of your atar using your aligned marks.

Yes they use raw marks but most atar calculators use aligned marks. If the atar calculator uses raw or aligned marks either way it will obviously be less accurate as they don't account for the difficulty of the test that specific year (usually it's based on previous years).
ahh okay, sitll dont get why they align? is it just for show ? who got a b6 and who didnt kinda thing?

i still feel like its dodgy tho, no way a bloody 57 in chem gets you an 80, a person who knows just prelim stuff can get like 40 raw lol.
You would be suprised by how harsh they mark the sciences, also someone who knows just prelim wouldn't get 40 no way.

can confirm sciences is marked stupidly harsh especially at certain schools.
many top schools have averages in the 50s on some tests.

it doesnt. at the lower marks every aligned mark counts for more raw marks. going off previous data, probably a 62 for 80.

Alignment occurs because marks are outcome based i.e band 6 in English might be “demonstrates outstanding understanding...” band 4 might be “soundly ...”. You don’t need a 90+ mark to show “outstanding understanding”. If someone this year was able to scrape all those descriptive outcomes with a raw 85, but the person with a raw 84 couldn’t satisfy all, then the band 6 gets pegged at a raw 85 which will align up to a 90.

2020 chem, says 57 went to 79, so im assuming a 60 would get like 81 or 82. And just like you said, course is easier so how the hell are the marks getting launched up so high??

I could have gotten a band 5 for chem then I got like 65 raw when I did the test for fun after school and gave my answers to my teacher to mark it

WOWZA!

Outcomes fam... someone who got 57 was able to *almost* satisfy what is classified as a “band 5 outcome” in the new syllabus.
