hi everyone I hope you all have been doing good

I've been wondering for a while what I wanted to do after I finish school. I've always changed my mind but focused on staying in the same field. I was openly thinking and want to do medicine but don't know what's the process. I know that there is an exam you have to sit called ucat but if I do this exam do I go into medicine or do I have to do another degree first. I also heard about gamsat but still have no clue what that is. I also am not doing academically well is there still a chance I can get better. I'm also scared for the prerequisites I do chemistry I heard that its a must to get into medicine. I just am lost idk anything

In my opinion don't stress too much on what you want to do. It will eventually come as you approach it. I didn't really now what I wanted to do throughout year 11 but as university approached towards the end of year 12 I eventually was able to make a decision that I is now my goal.

On the process of medicine if you wish to study medicine as an undergraduate ie straight out of year 12 they assess you on your ATAR, UCAT, and interview. The UCAT is an external test but doing well in it won't guaranteer a spot. You need to do well in all 3 elements. If you can get into medicine this way you go straight into medicine. There is always still a chance to do well and you have the whole of next year to prove yourself. Take year 11 as a learning experience and plus year 11 marks don't even count.

On the topic of gamsat, gamsat is a test you have to take to enter postgraduate medicine. That is you already have done another degree and wish to do medicine as a postgraduate degree. In this case you won't be required to do the UCAT, but you will need to do the gamsat.

On the topic of prerequisites, from what I can see there aren't any but there are recommended subjects like chem and bio

I believe medicine is 5 years at wsu and 6 years at UNSW. I am not entirely sure about the process afterwards but i'm pretty sure there's placements and things you need to do. I'll let other people that are more familiar with the process comment

As someone in university also trying to get into medicine, I get your concerns as I also had these during high school. With the UCAT, performing well in this doesn't get you into medicine; it gets you an interview provided your ATAR is sufficient for whichever universities you are going to apply for. Generally, a percentile of about 95 should guarantee you interviews for universities which look at UCAT. Then with the interview, it's self-explanatory: perform as well as you can, and hope that your performance is good enough to get into medicine. The GAMSAT is a post-graduate exam which you can do if you aren't successful getting into medicine during applying while in university. For this, you need a strong GPA (again, check to see what it is where you are applying to), albeit, the GAMSAT is much more difficult and a longer exam (6 hrs compared to 2 hrs for the UCAT). Chemistry is definitely not a must for medicine; you could do all languages or humanities and still get into medicine. What they say is that doing biology can help with some of the earlier concepts, but even if you don't do biology, you will learn everything you need to during first year university, so you don't have to worry about any prerequisite subjects or anything. UCAT & GAMSAT are similar exams that assess your aptitude.
UCAT + ATAR + interviews are used (with different weightings by each Uni) to select students for the undergraduate med courses.

GAMSAT + WAM (replacing GPA as the cumulative Uni grading system) + interviews are used to select students for postgraduate medicine (for students who’ve completed a minimum of a bachelors degree).

A graduate, with either an undergrad or postgrad med degree, has to complete at least one year of internship (with provisional registration as a doctor). After that, you can choose to be a career medical officer (nonspecialist) or apply to one of the colleges for further training to become a specialist. The training to become a GP is a minimum of three years. All other colleges require a minimum of five years training. Most people take longer than the minimum period because the specialist exams are tough (maximum period is 10 yrs) and fail rates are high. There are people who have studied 13 yrs at school, 7 yrs at Uni (postgrad pathway) and 10 yrs in a specialist program - that’s up to 30 yrs of study, so it requires a fair bit of commitment.

Most GPs have completed the additional three years of training.
From what I understand from my friends who are GPs, there are non RACGP accredited doctors working at GP practices but the Medicare rebates are lower, so they get paid less (eg. If they bulk bill) and/or their patients get less rebate when they claim from Medicare.
