1984 and human motivations?? (1 Viewer)

How does 1984 demonstrate how human behaviour/ motivations challenge assumptions/ ignite new ideas? I don't really understand what assumptions would be challenged or how the human behaviours would 'ignite new ideas'. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hey, here are some starting points:

* Human behaviour... think of Winston's characterisation throughout the triparte structure (state control, rebellion, defeat)

* Motivations... think of why Winston wants to rebel

* Assumptions... what is already in place in Oceania? Compare it to a contemporary setting, that could help. Think of why Orwell wrote this book in the first place (relate to Stalin's tyrannical rule of the Soviet Union etc.)

* New ideas... what does Winston's character show the audience about the effects of an oligarchal government?

You could break it down to something like this:

Winston challenges The Party ideals [BEHAVIOUR -> note his behaviour is inconsistent] by wanting to rebel through love (such as his relationship with Julia) and small acts (such as writing "Down with Big Brother" in his diary, wanting to start a collective rebellion etc.) [IGNITE NEW IDEAS -> something like... an anomaly could exist within a totalitarian regime etc.]
