I think this is state/territory dependent, I believe NSW requires a law degree in order to become a practicing lawyer.

You need a LLB to be a lawyer which you have to go to uni for.

Although, there are alternative pathways to Uni other than an atar.

Otherwise, a degree is usually required unless you have other overseas qualifications which have equivalent subjects to the Priestly 11 (and then the practical component).
