using the second equation

using Pythagoras we can say that

now we sub this expression into the first equation

now that we have found beta, just sub this value into or the first equation to find alpha which should be or some other equivalent value.

I am not quite sure how you were able to manipulate the equation from the 1st line to the second, I understand it, its just I don't know how you were able to know to change it into that form, if that makes sense?

ohh okay, I can see that now but I'm just unsure as to how one could know how this would use double angle properties from cos^2alpha

Try to derive it yourself. Use the relationship between and that @yanujw has included.

In a sense the thought process is similar to the way you get the expression

Spoiler if you couldn't find it out
Here is what I basically skipped in those two lines

oh I just realised that's the expression used when integrating cos^2x
