I think they should have mentioned positive correlation in Q35.

Some were common with Advanced and if you look at the solutions previously posted for the Advanced paper Q24 by 2xq, John Drake and romeo you see they all mentioned positive correlation

Yes. I think pc misunderstood the question. The question didn't say equate the two formulae and solve for n. It said when will the value of the machine be equal to the salvage value found in part (a) (ii) using the straight-line method.

You don't have to use the method that teacher did.

You can use an equation.

But if you use an equation it looks like this:



When you solve this equation you get n=4.

Quite right. No I just rushed my work. I think my brain changed "found" to "used".
