I am thinking about my university pathway. I live locally to Newcastle Uni but figured I should go somewhere else.

So my first thought was ANU but these threads:
ANU will ruin your future
Re-Think ANU
have sort of changed my mind. I'm going to do a degree in Software Engineering btw

I don't really want to go to Sydney sooooo...
What are the facilities at UON like?
Where else should I be going??

uon is a good uni from what i’ve heard, the only challenging part about going there might be that there are limited placements around newcastle area in software engineering but this is probably counteracted by the lower population (and also, hybrid work is somewhat common so you might be able to do hybrid internships), you have to do 3 months of work experience mandatory to get an accredited degree in engineering in australia so that’s why it’s relevant.

anu is good but more so for academic degrees than anything else, they’re the top research uni in australia for that reason. they are still good for industry degrees too and i wouldn’t say they are a bad uni by any means, so if you want to go there then don’t be discouraged by what those posts say. and fyi, you can probably find a post similar to what you linked for every uni, and tbh at least in australia most of the major unis have pretty similar experience, meaning that you’ll probably have a good time but a few bad lecturers or poorly planned classes. additionally for software engineering especially the uni you graduate from really plays no role unless you’re going for some super competitive company, companies are more so interested in work experience or projects
