i cant say abt my grades atm bc we are still going through prelim block and prelims are worth a lot but i can guess ranks based on how im going
hsc adv math (ngl i dont care abt this bc ill probably make 4u) - 50/160
chem (haven't done prelims yet, that could either drop me or push me up higher) - not sure, i was average in term 1 out of 72 ppl and then term 2 i was 1st)
phys (got cooked in this one bc of a technical issue while writing an exam, the mark is going to be so shit) - 30/48
e1 maths - 20/96 (maybe even better)
e1 eng - 20/48
adv eng - 40/144 (im fine except for prelims, depends on the marking of that paper and how many other ppl failed)
modern - 15/24

i have no clue what i rank in tuitions ngl but i def do worse bc i dont put serious effort into tuition, i just use their resources and stuff

these are all estimates. school gets a decent amount of band 6s in all the courses i do except physics but im pretty sure my marks in that one took a hit due to circumstances i couldnt control and its only up from here.

so yeah im doing okay in everything just not very good. i think im really critical of myself bc the school i go to is ranked in the low 40s or high 30s and we dont have many alumni that make undergrad med, at least in sydney and i feel like i have to overcompensate by being top in everything

also my grade is not the smartest, no offense to anyone but the class of 22 and 23 were just superior and we will tank the schools ranking for sure, and i deliberately picked out subjects that had selection criteria you had to meet (everything except modern were subjects i had to get into on the basis of marks) so my cohort would be stronger. ik i sound like a jackass but i think its necessary
Ur doing fine, if you don't get a high enough ATAR for med, just do premed. Its so competitive, just be aware of that. Like you literally have guys who have studied since day 1 to become a doctor because there parents want them to.

I have this guy in the year below me who has basically done all of math adv, ext, chem, and phys content for the HSC and he hasn't even started yr 11. Thats what your competing with.

If med is your dream, you'll get there no matter what it takes. Its gonna be hard work and dedication for yr 12, but remember that nothing is easy in life.

Remember Yr 12 is 1 year of your life, just grind and grind and when your done you can do whatever you want.

But also, prioritise your mental health. Take breaks whenever you can and don't get too down about your results. Your ATAR doesn't define you, if you don't get the ATAR you wanted on that results day there is always another pathway.

can we still clutch year 12 term one if we flopped prelims😔
year 12 term one (so term 4 of the actual year) was a flop for me, looking back id say to myself i should have studied better but it rlly was a practice for the rest of year 12 where i have improved so much so im sure you all will too. theres rlly a lot of time and assessments to do to up your ranks and marks, it will all be ok:)

try hard in tuition treat it like a competion and try to beat everyone, if you dont know how u rank just go and ask around to people who look satisfied and thats your new goal.

I do have to admit tho. I wish I was ur 'guy'. The problem i've had since I was 12 was that I always wanted to do well in my respective yr and then the following yr, I realise that effort was kinda useless because LITERALLY EVERYTHING goes to shit in a snap of a finger. Then u get to yr 12 and u realise instead of studying for that sor exam (that u btw plan to drop) u could've put more time into maxing out everything from the yr 12 course. Everyone currently in grad years 2026 and above, REMEMBER ur prelims mean 0, nothign. if u want to get into med, fuck prelims (except maybe maths or smn so u can do 4u). Get some yr 12 stuff done after maybe breezing through the yr 11 stuff. Trust me, your future self will love u.

sorry i dont mean to trauma dump on here bc its kind of embarrassing but im hoping someone in y12 or older has had an experience like this and turned out to be wrong about what they can achieve
hi, i’m currently in year 12 and yeah i’m like a living example that you can turn around your life basically.

yeah u js gotta clock it in your head somehow and it is your mindset that is basically like pulling you back. like instead of thinking that “you can’t bring it back” why don’t you take small steps to improving your academics??
a reality check; but if ur gonna have a sook n be like “oh i’m so afraid i’m not gonna be able to comeback” ermmmm like ??? stop bc you just have a bad mindset and think positively from now on, bc i used to have a shit mindset in year 11 which brought my mental health down which lead to impacting my academics negatively

like make a goals which are like realistic and achievable basically that SMART goal thing, that’s what i basically used to improve my academics and like big tip, try to speed run the content during the big 6 week holidays bc like … ur in year 12 soon the holidays are not gonna be holidaying anymore til the day u finish the hsc

i really flopped prelim year for most of my subjects like C—B for half of them, it’s easy to feel horrible but you have to consider that you’ve probably only had about 9 months of time to figure out your study patterns, what expectations there are for assessments, how much time u need to study, time management etc. year 12 is arguably easier for that reason, you already mostly know what you need to do, you just need to do it. don’t get defeated by your prelim results, instead look at what you did poorly at, and make sure you put in effort to improve at those things in year 12 so that it doesn’t happen again. at the start of year 11 i’d get a bad subject mark and just went “im
not good at the subject” or “the assessment was hard”, that’s just not the way to go about things and leads to demotivation and stress. instead focus on what you can do to get better, you’re likely stuck with the subject so all you can do is put in max effort to improve now.

also if you think you need to put in double the hours you did in year 11 to be successful then so be it, it depends how much you’re willing to sacrifice to get a good atar, if u think about it it will mean you need to be in the top 2% of students or wtv, so that must take a good amount of effort (take care of yourself though obviously). realistically i was probably doing like 2-3 hours of good study in year 11, in year 12 that turned into like 6-7 on the weekends sometimes but thats just what i had to do to get better. not to mention that i wasn’t really the best student in previous years, so i was also catching up to my peers who had already been strong students previously. i also felt the same that i put in so many hours in year 11 but didnt get anywhere, id literally be studying what felt like non stop but truthfully it was actually getting me somewhere, i just couldn’t see it yet, and also i was studying inefficiently and wasn’t learning material in depth enough which was an issue that i had to fix. so overall, just keep your determination up and try to fix the mistakes you made in year 11, rather than panic that you’ll never make it. i literally had no idea i was gonna do as well as i did, and if u told me in year 11 i got the atar that i did i would be so surprised lmao, you just gotta keep moving forward

same, feel like i fked everything except pdh n math lol i do 3u did good in my adv test and kinda sht in 3u. i have no one to blame but myself bc ive been slacking all year and not taking it seriously even though i have aspirations for 4u which i now have to work my arse off for but hopefully it all works out in the end . i absolutely got cooked by phys bc i havent paid attention all year. i feel so sht about being lazy this year and having no drive to study unless they're like short bursts of "i have to study i have to do good" but those don't last at all but now like after bombing prelims i've realised what the stakes are and im excited to see what im capable of in y12. hopefully the exhausting feeling u have rn goes away and through the holidays you can relax and regain that desire to achieve ur y12 goals w undergrad med its never too late just needa work hard for ts one year as cliche as it sounds haha just think of whatever intrinsic or extrinsic motivation you have and stick to it stay disclipined
thanks and good luck to you too!

my pleasure dude, i totally understand you because most my close mates are like high achievers, so the pressure is intense HAHA. but like don't lose hope!!! i was getting uhhh not so good marks in maths and eng (D's and E's) in year 11 but like now we CHILLINGGGG and doing well, it's the mindset that pushes you to work hard :)

good luck on your studies! make sure to improve your mental health, go out w/ your mates like atl once a week, and have fun

Bruh guys i also need advice whether i should take up math ext 2. I kinda wanna drop 2 subjects and this is really my only option. I’m not by any means the “best of the best” math student but im pretty good. I’m averaged about 75% in e 1 and 94% in adv. I’m interested in pursuing 4u but tbh i don’t know if i’m good enough. The thing is if i do 4u im potentially forfeiting a band 6 in adv.

Also if i were to drop 4u to adv in the 2nd term of yr12 how does this work with marks for internals??

depends on your school (i think)
at mine they make you do the 2u exams anyways in case someone drops so those would be their internals
