Hey! So i see a lot of people talking about this and it confuses me a little! Ive never bothered with memorising essays, all i have ever needed were quotes and a thesis that i can adapt…but now thinking about it, since i can get a bit perfectionistic with my writing and thus slow myself down in exams…should i actually do that?
what do you actually memorise? A general structure? Or word for word?

ive never done this before, i always just go with gut feeling. Should i do this?

if ur good at adapting full responses then memorise, otherwise do quotes. I usually memorise coz im a lazy fuck and don't put any extra effort into english other than the bare minimum which is memorising.

I don’t recommend memorising word for word cause that’s a pain in the arse to remember, especially when you have multiple essay to do. It might vary, but I found that for the most part, adapting a memorised essay to hsc questions are fairly easy. And at the end of the day, the last thing you wanna be doing (I fell victim to this) is sitting there for ages not knowing the perfect response to write, and just having that pre written essay is always a great cushion to fall back on. Like the previous guy mentioned, if you’re not looking for band 6 responses, just fully memorise an essay, and throw in buzz words from the question (maybe even the rubric) and make it sound like you know what you’re doing when in reality you don’t 🙏🙏.
Ps It wouldn’t hurt to save your creativity for mod C

Womp womp. Honestly I was just referring to the laziness factor, and if you’re looking for bair minimum (which no one associates with band 6), then just copy pasting a refined memorised essay with a few adjustments to the question is all one needs.

Do you have any recomendations for the structure of these kinds of prepared essays? Is it like, a selection of thesis statements, some quote analysis? I wanna be sure its able to be adapted to lots of kinds of questions as well! Sorry if its a silly question, i have never tried this method before!

nah all good i reckon u should make a base essay to a generic question that can be very flexible in any sort of way, and then obviously memorise the key TQEs and context/purpose words in the essay. and then try see how it can adapt to different types of questions and ideas from those questions. if i wasnt so lazy, this would be what i wouldve done for trials. prob gonna do this for hsc tho.

Off the bat a couple things you don’t need to memorise is introduction, final linking statement of each body, and your entire conclusion. They for the most part can be very generic and rlly rely on the contents of the question the most. As for the rest, body thesis’, any context sentences, ENTIRE tqes (as you aren’t changing quotes, techniques and analysis as you know).

yea this guy is correct and also another tip for memorising. read one sentence at a time, then when u read the next sentence, read both of them together and then eventually u will get the whole paragraph like that, and try write it down prob that will get it in yo head faster. hope u make it outta the hood yung bludicus 🙏

I’ll also agree with this, and did it for my history trial. I literally just read one sentence, wrote it down 3 times without looking, then added the next sentence and so forth. Absolute pain to do but it’s worth it if you simply can’t memorise any other way. Also, another thing I like to do is highlight/bolden the key terms and points of the sentences and try to remember them if nothing else. These terms are what brings value to your response, and however you choose to link the key terms together to form coherent sentences shouldn’t matter.

i did my hsc last year. i tend to go off on tangents when i think about things and as such i knew i wouldn’t be able to produce a high quality essay with sophisticated ideas and vocabulary under complete exam conditions with just quotes remembered. so i memorised the generic essays i wrote throughout the term (structured and colour coded, without the conclusion). those memorised essays were drafted and then put through internal marking and internal assessments (module assessments, and trials), and then refined even further to prepare for the hsc. that way, i felt at least confident i was bringing in something good into the english hsc that would scrape a decent mark, as long as i knew how to adapt it. if you look around the bos website there is a thread on memorising where i state how i did my memorising and memorised 3 essays, 1 discursive and 1 creative in the 2-3 days leading up to the hsc (memorisation through recitation). i was also a perfectionist with english so i thought it best to memorise something good.

that being said, i will reiterate a point i’ve said quite a few times on this site, there is no point memorising if you don’t know / can’t adapt your thesis and ideas to the question. you could have the nicest essay with such powerful and sustained ideas but if it’s not relevant to the question bye bye band 6. if you do go the memorising route, if you feel like you won’t be able to adapt pull out some hsc past papers and just practise adapting your thesis and topic sentences until you feel comfortable.

but another thing is that my friend hated english, so she only memorised quotes and a thesis and she ended up with a comfortable band 6, and i know many other kids have too. quotes and thesis can be enough, especially since you’ve practised that method this whole year. i don’t think you should memorise personally because you’re more used to the quotes + thesis way and writing a good memorised essay (unless you have a 19+/20 essay lying around from trials you want to make generic and tweak around a little bit just before your hsc which i don’t recommend) takes time
