Hey guys,

So ive been pondering alot recently about my subject choices. Recently it has been on my mind that I feel I want to do science ext, but doing science ext means I would have 13 units which is way to much.

I have picked up math ext 2, and tbh I don't know if im good enough..

Look, I got pretty average results in ext 1, getting a 65% on the prelim. I feel I studied ok, but definitely not much as much as I should have. lol I also literally lost like 20% in stupid mistakes like miscalculations, like term adding errors and missing 1 line of working out or just literally accidentally writing the wrong answer. Like pretty much every question in the test I should of been able to do pretty easily except for maybe 1 or 2 graphing questions.

Anyway, I like the content so far in 4u it is just the fact I feel im not good enough. I would also like to add that I have not been studying at all as much as I should have. Literally been averaging barley 2 hours a day which is really bad ik. Im also cooked for physics.

Yeah so that being said, I really do want to do science ext but I have too many units. I am already struggling to keep up with my work and feel taking on anther unit could be detrimental for my ATAR.

Look, I like want to do science ext, but this probably means dropping math ext 2 which I also enjoy but even my parents don't think im capable which has made me second guess myself.
There is also the option that I could drop earth, however this is probably my highest performing subject with minimal effort.

Id also like to add that I have already missed 3 science ext lessons which is not good, althought it is not the end of the world as there is no assessment for this term

Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated, I can't make decisions myself.

i wish i could see u irl so i could slap some confidence into u mate. u need to start having faith in urself. If you like 4u math, and you think you have the motivation to put in the effort than keep it, and sack science extension. Also the expectation that you should be full on studying for 2hrs every day is a lot to ask of yourself. U gotta sustain this for another 12 months, remember that.

+ With all due respect, u gotta make a decision and stick to it. Nothing like what happened with chem and investigating last year.

maybe dont pick sci ext, it does not scale well even tho it’s an ‘ext’ subject + ur major work doesnt even determine ur external/hsc mark but a random exam would

hey again (lmao),
man I'm gonna be so real with you, you already study a fuck ton more than 75% of people I know I did NOT spend 2 hours a day studying literally only stayed up to date w homework and studied 2 weeks before exams and that was it (except for chem but I studied chem for fun when I had time bc I love it). 2 hours of studying is already a crazy expectation on top of homework imo bc my ass got home and did the mandatory hw + made notes and that was all I did for tops 3-4 hours before goofing off

It depends where your priorities lie, and whether you prefer math or extension. science extension will do nothing for your atar in terms of scaling + difficulty, but I guess it really depends on how much ATAR means to you in terms of uni pref and all that. The girl I knew who also did 4u and sci extension ended up dropping sci extension cause she couldn't balance workload so even though she only actively did 10u (accelerated course in yr 11) for yr 12 (iirc), I would keep the 2U sciences you have and drop sci extension bc having 12U is a lot.

There's nothing stopping you from doing your own research for fun, hell learn the content for fun if it really does appeal to you.
Best of luck out there

what other subjects could u drop
also agree you need to have more faith in yourself you deserve to be in the hard classes, i wanted to drop ext english this time last year but it gets so much better any ext subject
I mean tbh i could drop physics or earth, for earth i do well in but i sorta find it boring whereas for physics i am just generally shit at but sorta need it for uni and careers i want to pursue, so im just gonna slog it out.

Yeah tbh while i feel i would enjoy science ext, from the advice i have been given it doesnt seem to really contrinute to your ATAR. Yeah i think i need to just focus on my path and grind math.

I agree

I just gotta stick with my decision. I cannot repeat what happened with chem. While science ext looks interesting, yeah i don't think its a worth while subject. I just gotta focus on my math even though many people may be doubting me.

I don’t know why. I just recently have so many doubts. I just gotta regain my confidence i guess.

Also general question, would Unis like someone who did science extension ? Or would they prefer someone who aced hard maths, physics etc.

The only thing being is i was sorta considering medicine- probably pre med and wondering whether doing a report like this may look really good for ur CV, especially working with unis

they don't judge you on what subject you take unless its assumed knowledge or a prerequisite. Check what prerequisites are req. for med. But generally acing maths and phys is better than just taking science extension unless you have some real passion for it. I would suggest trying ur best for maths and phys instead. Good Luck :)

Nah I get the doubts, my first term of yr 12 was tough as well bc I started bombing subjects that I did really well in previously because of the step up it is, you will bounce back with time and probably a lot faster than others given you already have a regular study commitment (however, don't push yourself to burnout haha). Honestly, if we're talking unis applied through UAC (and VTAC as far as I know), they don't rlly gaf about subjects as long as you meet the pre-reqs and atar thresholds, however I don't know the selection process for med (or any course really) if you sit between the minimum atar considered and guaranteed atar threshold.

In terms of usefulness however 4U math is likely 10x more useful in uni bc its generally applicable across courses, sci extension does give you a little head start on statistics in uni but really it's not that and it's really only beneficial (MAYBE) if you wanna do honours or post grad research since it sort of acts like a taster

Yeah ok.

So is the scaling for science ext pretty rubbish for an extension subject? I’ve heard it doesn’t scale well at all really. Tbh i would like to do it, i feel i do find it a decent amount interesting.
But yeah, I agree with you guys, I think just stick with my math and other subjects. I don’t think science ext is really worth the time for me when i could just focus my time on doing well in my mains subjects!

Does anyone get how these tables work? Does this show good scaling for Science Extension? Like what is it showing

Sack those tables and look at this one alignment looking pretty shit ngl its just not rewarding enough for the amount of stress it gives

its scaling is actually ass, in 2022 or sth u need like 88% as a cut off to a band 6💀 might as well do food tech or pdh at that point
