Hi everyone, I am currently in year 9 and accelerating math adv. I have the opportunity to accelerate math ext 1 too, but I got chosen to accelerate SORII as well. Due to my school, I definitely have to do accelerated math adv and SORII, but was wondering if I should take up math ext 1 as well? Everyone keeps telling me I'll be too pressured so idk

I know some people who used to do math adv, ext1 and bio accelerated but a lot of them ended up dropping it because it was too much and one even dropped math altogether for yr 11. But if u think u are able to manage the workload then it should be fine.

What year would you do your hsc for those subjects? Depending on how much pressure your school places on year 9 and 10 studies, I feel like you could get away with neglecting them and focusing on the 3 subjects

I would do them in 2026. But yeah my school doesn't place that much pressure on most of the year 10 subjects except english so yeah definitely in year 10 I could get away with it. However for SORII I have a test every lesson to maintain rankings apparently so I'm worried about that but with good organisational skills I think (hopefully) I can do it

accelerating 3 subjects rlly worked for me it certainly doesn't for everyone and only a few ppl in my year kept the 3 others dropped to 2 or 1, I loved having 50% of the hsc out of the way by year 12 and band 6's to keep me motivated, the pressure of 3 is actually diabolical though esp if ur aiming for higher marks

how much did you study for them when accelerating them in combination with like your year 10/11 subjects?

math adv and sor II imo are the perfect subjects to accelerate.

sor II is incredibly easy and not content heavy at all

math adv would be easy for someone who was actually chosen to accelerate, this means that you're basically capable of getting a high b6 (you're in year 9 like thats insane so it says alot)

i definitely would stick with those 2 subjects and just maximise the marks there. you're in year 9 aswell so you can always choose mx1 later

yeah SORll is an easy band 6 as most of the time the questions are predictable so u can literally memorise ur essay

haven't accelerated 3 subjects but ive gotten maths adv out of the way. my advice is def go for maths adv and sorII but maybe not e1 because generally speaking i think its a good idea to still focus on any y10/11 subjects and not put that much of a load on yourself. not saying you can't handle it just saying you should consider whether or not you can still give y10/11 some effort. just hear me out

often ppl will relax too much in y10/11 and neglect certain courses (even a little bit) and as a result of their bad results it demotivates them from taking up subjects for their hsc/having hope that they can improve. this mainly happens in people trying to do some of the objectively harder subjects like physics or extension 2 maths. yes you can improve but it is always so much more demotivating when you start from a lower point and have to work your way up.

and you have to consider that you have your hsc exams in the first few weeks of year 12 so that means all of y11 and start of y12 you will be grinding for your hsc so that gives you not a lot of room for you to make a comeback in any subjects you may have neglected in the process

not saying you will do badly but just don't put too much of a load on yourself, especially if you are going to take very content heavy and difficult subjects like mine in y11/12 bc even accelerating 1 subject that won't even count towards my atar was pretty tough on me. you can always do e1 later

totally agree its insane and you have to be crazy smart to accelerate

but everyone that does their hsc 1 year before their graduating year gets the offer at the end of y9 bc y10 is y11 for them lol

tbh I gave 2/3 of my time to accelerated subjects from year 10 up until hsc, and 1/3, sometimes less, to normal yr 10 and prelim. close to hsc time I definitely didn't care abt prelim work

the workload coming from the accelerated subjects was x5 times more than everything else combined anyways

I didn't neglect regular yr 10 and prelim by any means, accelerated work just took up more of my time. there were days where I wished there were more than 24 hours in a day bcz there was sm work and not enough time to complete it, it was just a lot of *volume**, difficulty wise I wasn't having major issues with adv/bio/or ext 1. burn out was very real sometimes, so I learnt to take breaks and self care when needed

you can try it out you could always drop something if it's too much, the pros and cons differ for each student
