okay so basically we did a response on "a heart of darkness" for ext1 where we had 30 mins to write a response to a weird as question:in what ways does conrad use the imgery of light and dark, and to what end?

and my teacher usually grades in class tasks and this was our first one a she gave me a D 😭😭😭😭 this is lowk making me doubt if i should even be in extension, even though i got reccomeneded because i feel like i really genuinley do NOT know how to study in terms in english as a whole... esp in ext when my teacher will just give us random readings "to look at" - what she actually says. can someone tell me how to incorporate the readings to give us into my whole understanding of the text?? and also lend me advice on how to study for ext as a whole in terms of notes, ideas and stuff???

I used to do Eng Ext 1 (enjoyed it, I just dropped due to the rest of my program being heavy) and also did decently well - may I ask what feedback you were given?

For critical readings, what I used them for would be to just find a phrase that essentially sums up the argument that you'd want to make in an essay. Often you can find really niche articles for famous texts that perfectly fit what you'd want to write about in an essay. I tried to remember one per text studied to support my argument. What some people do (and what you shouldn't do) is use it as a piece of evidence; it rather should be a perspective you use to highlight your point in your analysis. Do some practice with this!!

I agree studying for English is hard; I'm very much the kind of person who just does practice responses, so I unfortunately can't help there.

Hope this helps somewhat!

I’ve taught ext 1 to year 11 and 12 . I will send what I can find to help you decide . The question is basically asking you to show how light is used to show us the great things to be aware of and take care to avoid whereas th3 darkness has a sombre tone and is about thungs that are hidden and implied and show crime etc in order to challenge and reshape the way we th8nk by looking at life from numerous perspectives

ohhh that definitely gave me a new perspective!!! how you use niche articles to 'support' your arguments!!! do you know where i could possible find these articles and how i could effectively integrate them into your response to support your argument?? maybe an example??

also the feedback that my teacher gave me was mainy "answering the question" and that i have too much stuff in ts. she said that its better not to have too many ideas Ideas and instead have to flow and link together. she also said that the Marker must see clear though process.

In Year 11 I did Dracula for English Ext 1 - here is a passage from a practice essay I wrote:

Dracula himself is immediately set apart from the English gentleman with his “very marked physiognomy” and a “lofty domed forehead”, invoking the pseudoscience of phrenology (the belief the skull’s formation indicated an individual’s traits) to portray him as a “morally and physically repugnant individual” (Marshall 2000 p.162). By setting Dracula apart so distinctly and using phrenology to immediately establish his tainted character, his eventual migration to London became even more terrifying to Victorian audiences.

As you can probably tell, the quote is not expanded upon, and is rather used as part of my analysis. You can also argue against the critical reading you use. The way you can integrate the quote also differs - for example, I could also write that sentence as:

As observed by Marshall (2000, p.162), Dracula is portrayed as a "morally and physically repugnant individual", setting him apart from the English gentleman and Othering him through his "very marked physiognomy", which invokes the pseudoscience of phrenology.

As for where to find critical readings, you can use Google Scholar! Also, if you sign up for the state library, you can also access JSTOR, which was honestly the love of my life.

Hope this helps somewhat!

the important part in this question is "to what end", though generally questions won't give such open themes.

a D grade means you fundamentally didn't answer the question, which means you probably didn't address the purpose of the imagery in the first place with sufficient engagement. i.e. why does that author bother using imagery, how do they use it and why does their use of it contribute to establishing their point at all.

you don't need (per se) to read a single critical piece in ext 1 unless the question asks specifically for incorporation of them, they're just useful to understand existing interpretations and perspectives on the text. in my opinion, the best way to study for english in general is to just read the text and think about it. if you're struggling to come up with cohesive ideas, then you turn to critical pieces and "study" for it. the other "studying" portion is just writing skills, refining them via practice and feedback and memorising quotes for exams. don't read the text blindly and passively with no engagement, stop at each narrative point and think about what has happened and why it happened; the "why" it happened is the part that you end up talking about in essays, and the "techniques" are just the way that you realised the cause in the first place. i.e. imagery works because it conjures up pictures of concepts that are generally similar in a relevant respect to the point the author is trying to make with it; metaphors work because they draw comparison to things we already know or understand and try to ascribe the relevant similarity of A to B.
