Hi all,
My dream degree is law at UNSW. I have received 94.45 ATAR and LAT 70 and have secured an early entry offer for double Law at UTS. I am keen to do law at UNSW but not sure if I will get in with my ATAR. What are the chances of getting into Law at UNSW with my score.

What is the best option:

Option 1 - Take the offer for Law at UTS since it's a Law degree
Option 2 - Enroll in another course (commerce or arts) at UNSW and try for internal transfer into Law at UNSW in year 2.

Would really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks

Hey! Very similar situation here, i have a 96.1 ATAR and 80 LAT which i'm not sure will make it into UNSW law either (law/criminology there has been my dream degree). I'm considering UTS law too. After speaking to many people it seems like if you really want to end up in UNSW law, maybe just begin there with the degree you want it to be combined with (for me it would be criminology) as internal transfers are relatively easier than external transfers (i'm pretty sure there's no loss of time either with this). However taking the UTS law offer is also a safe idea because you're guaranteed to be able to have a law degree, as if you begin at UNSW there's still the risk of not being eligible to transfer into law in year 2. I can't really say what's the better option because i'm still deciding myself haha but am glad i'm not alone.

I personally would just do law at UTS 😅
But it really is up to you. Do you think you'd be satisfied doing law at UTS? Or do you think you'll always be thinking about UNSW law since you said it was your dream degree.

You could always do a different course as your undergraduate and then do Juris Doctor at UNSW postgraduate. But that would be much longer and probably a different experience to undergraduate law so maybe not the most ideal.

im in the same position as u im uncertain whether i can get in but personally i would do option 2 bc:
- it is easier to internal transfer than external bc if ur already a unsw student u dont need to sit the LAT which i tried twice but did not too good either times
- im sure uts is good for law but ive heard the job market still cares about which uni u came from so i feel like unsw would be slightly more beneficial in that aspect
- unsw lawsoc seems rlly fun

Hey!! I’ll be so honest, you’re not going to like my answer haha. Though when I saw your reply come into my emails I knew I had to share everything that happened.

Turns out I didn’t get into UNSW or UTS law at all! My ATAR was above the usual UTS requirement, though applications were ridiculously competitive for my cohort and UTS law raised to a 97/98ish. Even for UNSW law, it was super competitive as a close friend of mine with above a 98 ATAR and decent LAT did not get an offer in any round whatsoever. (I also know of people with over 95 LATs who didn’t even get in with 96+ ATARS so it seems that the LAT truly is a cash grab since those who excel in it don’t even get offers).

Anyways as someone who likes to plan out her whole life in detail, I was very shocked as the backup plan I had (UTS) wasn’t even a backup anymore lolll. Even for Macquarie Uni, I got an offer only in a pretty late round.

I was heartbroken during December/Jan offer rounds period, but looking back I love how everything turned out. I ended up deferring the offer for Macquarie Law and studying a double degree in Commerce/Arts at USYD, with majors in law related subjects (e.g Business Law is my commerce major and I absolutely love it, along with my other subjects!!). My plan is to hopefully transfer into law here (though this is also extremely competitive- but I’ve so far found it’s easier to get the required marks (at least from previous years- it changes every year). There’s even options to transfer between unis (eg to UTS). If none of these work out whatsoever, I can always take up my offer for MQU 😊

You won’t know until offers come out but I do think law admissions will be tough for you guys too. But know that whatever happens, you’ll find your way (maybe you’ll inadvertently realise you have a passion for something else even!). All the best!!!!!!!

thank youu!!! I'm glad everything worked out for you :) do you think commerce at unsw is also super competitive? i'm thinking of putting that as a backup option and then transfer internally second year (with law) , but apparently commerce is a super popular degree.

woah, how much did you study for trials (if you remember)
quite a lot. i think memorising stuff has some of the best return on investment for the hsc. imo it's better to use someone else's notes or get chatgpt to write them so u can focus all ur time on memorisation. in an actual essay u won't have much space or time to write that much, so cram it with as much specific information as possible
