hi idk if ur school offers this but I highly recommended sor1 or sor2 (the same thing just has differences in units). considering the fact u wanna pursue smth other than business, i really would urge u to consider sor2. it’s a humanities subject that i think you would do well in considering the fact that ur strong at both humanities & english. in year 11, it’s a bit boring (maybe bc of my year 11 sor teacher) but you’ll get through it, just need to memorise tbh. and in year 12, it’s a lot more engaging & fun. i absolutely love sor in year 12 and am excelling at it, it’s ssooo good. if ur school does offer it, than feel free to ask me any questions abt it if ur interested. if not, that’s fine.
additionally, i think taking up cafs (community & family studies) is smth to look into. im pretty sure it’s basic stuff. ive never done the subject nor know much abr it but ive seen a lot of ppl talk good abt it so if u wanna do ur research on that than do so!
I was initially wondering last year if my school had sor, but I don't know anyone who does it - which means it probably doesnt exist. I don't think we have cafs either - my options feel so limited because I can only do a tech, language, sac, slr or hms, which is not that ideal...
edit: i can do geography/history too but probably not.

you could try a history? modern and ancient are pretty similar tbh... if you enjoy english, especially essay writing, you'll do well in either of those subjects :) as someone who's probably gonna take hist ext next year, try modern!! and also modern doesnt scale too bad so its not like thats a drawback or anything :)

apparently cafs scales pretty poorly, so if you wouldn't mind picking a history up, then maybe consider that?

well, to your second point, probably keep computing for those two extra units... you might as well! since it puts you at 13, over the 12 required to enter year 11 :)

is there any reason not to finish computing accel, to your third point?
Hmm yep I was thinking of maybe history but I barely ever took history nor know about it that well. A lot of the people doing that subejct take accelerated history and are quite good - which I think will mean it is harder for me to catch up...

For computing accel, the teacher is unfortunately horrible - he chat gpt's everything even our assessment, and there is much that I need to do to stay ahead in a small class of pretty bright students. I think I'll continue it though - just to get a feel of what the hsc is like a year before - but I think I need a backup in case - so if I screw up, it won't count - which is what I'm referring to in my 1st and 2nd questions 😭

to be fair to you, as much as already having an understanding of the course is important, you are supposed to be TAUGHT the content 😭
what do you mean by accel? if you haven't chosen classes yet, how do you know how many accel kids there are 😭 ⁉

tahts fucked up... i won the lottery with my software teacher who has like a gazillion years in programming and networking 😭 i couldn't imagine him ever doing something like that 😭

I kinda meant that for accel, a bunch of my friends have already chosen to do history - who are doing accelerated history right now. They're doing ancient history accelerated but becuase they have experience doing assessments for history, they can probably do modern as well and do well in it.

Yeah, its actually cooked - and because he's such a bad teacher, a lot of people leave accel computing so last year i think there were only 4 people who actually did it for hsc. You're so lucky to have a teacher like that 🤧

Hey guys so update, spoke to my teachers and my math teacher said I was better off doing the advanced course - so now I've decided upon:
economics + legal + business + english advanced + english extension 1 + math advanced = 11 units. I need everyone's opinion on the following three questions I'm debating:

1. I still have my doubts about doing three social sciences - especially with business - but I feel that I would do better in them than other courses. Does anyone have any ideas for something I could do rather than business that I would still do well in as a student who is strong at humanities and english - but not interested in tech nor languages?

2. Right now, these subject choices total to 11 units - but I need 1 more unit for the minimum units to take for year 11. I was thinking of SAC since it seems simple but I am not sure I would enjoy it. Does anyone recommend any one unit courses other than eng/math that I can complete for my minimum courses?

3. Also, I'm debating on whether or not to continue computing accelerated - and finish it, then still do 10 units in year 12, and have my best 10 count which may or may not be my accel. computing. Should I do this, or just do courses and not finish my accelerated one?

Even if you don't have ideas for all of them, any answer to any point would be much appreciated :)
SOR is easy but kinda boring so that can be an option but yeah maybe try geo or history. But it depends on what you’ll enjoy. Since you’ve already started your computing accel course u may as well finish it off if u can cause it will be good to get 1 subject out of the way. Unless u really really hate it then maybe u can drop if u want. And also what are ur doubts with business? Is it that u think the content will be boring or u won’t do well in it? Cause honestly if ur good at commerce u should be good with business cause its literally just memorisation and it isn’t too hard

Thanks for the info. I think if SOR is boring I could try a more challenging subject - like doing physics - but I think I might be better off with SOR as a chill subject, then drop it in Y12. I'm so sorry but I lwk can't with geo and history 😭 Class can sometimes be so boring when we repetitely do the same topic (like we did population pyramid for 6 lessons straight in geo after our exams were done - and majority of us aren't even doing geo next yr.) My doubts with business are nothing but the scaling. I'm sure it will be a good subject and easy to memorise - but if I get scaled down after doing well - it will affect me. I'm aware I shouldn't be judging on scaling right now - but that's one of my current concerns with it.

yeah tbh I also dislike history and geo too. But it depends on what u enjoy more cause I'm pretty sure lots of people get high atar's with business so that shouldn't be a problem, But tbh it's better doing a subject that u find easy, enjoyable and will do well in than to do a subject that u struggle or hate. If u enjoy sciences and are fine with doing physics then maybe u can consider it over business. But if u think ur willing to put in the effort to do do good in physics then maybe choose physics

Hmm fair enough, I think physics might not be the best option for me - but I'll consider it either way...
So right now my subject choices are: accelerated computing + economics + legal + business + english advanced + extension 1 + math advanced = 13 units. This should be good, though i might replace computing with SAC if I feel I really hate it...

Now that I've got a general gist, what do you guys think I could get for an atar with these subjects (worst case scenario - low 80s, best case scenario - mid 90s)??

Depends entirely on what marks u get. But dw I know of lots of people who got 95+ with similar subjects

i mean, i'm pretty sure you can achieve any atar with any subjects, and none of those subjects are ones which people say are "bad" for an atar
when you say "what atar could i get" it really depends on how well you do in those subjects, not the subjects you choose :)

Those subjects don't look too bad: not more than one major work :tick: , eng+mat adv :tick: , and you seem happy with the courses :tick:

not to be cliched, but putting the study and hours and effort in will get you a high mark regardless of scaling or doing a "bad" subject... it's just that you need to put more effort in, in those "bad" subjects...

good luck! :)

'im only good at commerce' as she proceeds to choose one of the hardest HSC subjects / the furthest thing from commerce 😭

your atar could be literal mystery marks or 99 we don't know your abilities (you probs don't even know) just try your best. what will be will be
