14 hour shift in medicine FML

Just remember to do the important things first and don't waste too much time on cannulas. GOGOGO!

14 hour shift in medicine FML

I only did 2 ABGs in med school and both were not successful but was very lucky to learn the technique well from the supervising doctors. My 3rd ABG was when I was a doctor and succeeded very well. Cannulation is a different beast all together. You are taught one technique in medical school...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

I think they were saying probably just after 2020 Blacktown will have around 900 beds which is Westmead's size at the moment. They will be building another building after the first one is completed. It is decently efficient but there always seems to be a huge gap between medical admin and...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

Yeh it's not terrible but I have a progressive mindset and it really annoys me that little things could be done to improve efficiency but they don't happen. Neurosurgery good luck with that I've heard it's insanely hard to get in. I think Blacktown is heading in the direction where all major...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

Is his name Andrew? He's a nice guy and a close friend. He's really passionate so that's a plus. I'm a realistic kind of person and I'm not super competitive. Therefore, I find it pretty hard to distinguish one self from others who are pursuing a other activities to put on their CV. If you put...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

4pm-12pm = 8 hour shift? I've read his other threads typical troll has nothing better to do with his life. What a sad sad person. I would feel sorry for him but not really. I do apologise for making that assumption about law students but I'm just going by the general population stereotype and...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

Lol who does the weekend shifts in private hospitals? Oh I forgot also JMOs. Good luck trying to do 15 cannulas, rewriting 30 med charts/reviewing medications, admitting 3 patients, supervising 3 CT scans, 10 venepunctures, placing 20 fluid orders whilst checking patients electrolytes, chasing...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

Yeh intern. It's not discouraging but a realistic view of what you will be required to do. I was covering 3 wards as a single doctor. Anything trouble I would need to review myself, fever, haematuria, chest pain etc. (Yes you can ask the more advanced doctors but if you keep asking they will get...

14 hour shift in medicine FML

Just completed my 14 hour shift on a weekend. I must warn people who want a family and social life it's going to be extremely hard to balance with shifts like that. It was literally nonstop jobs for 14 hours. Imo better than studying but pretty draining. GLHF

If you're thinking of return on investment Medicine is decent and stable. You will be able to pay back the loan if you work in medicine no doubt although you will be less financially secure than a CSP student. My suggestion is Start tech company. Profit.

Interview includes personal, scenario and role play questions. Intern position isn't hard to get if you want to go rural. You can get loans to do the course but there will be interest on them.

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

Tell that to the USYD graduate that managed to secure a dermatology training position right after residency whilst others with PHDs struggle. Tell that to the previous students who have done a Masters of Philosophy along with their MBBS degree. And no they don't spend an extra 2 years at...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

Tiers only seem to be an issue in applying for Dermatology apart from that it's just research opportunities and opportunities to pursue masters or a PHD concurrently with a medical degree. If you feel like spending 2-3 years as unaccredited reg that may be fine but it won't help work/life...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

Consultants previously did walk in because there was an excess in jobs and training positions available and there wasn't 1400 med school graduates per year. Well said you may be right to a degree. But do remember research can count for a heavy component on the CV itself. References and interview...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

He means good research is hard to come by in surgery due to biases but that is the nature of surgery itself and therefore will never be eliminated but there are still surgical research being published. I know of someone just published in Lancet and his project was related to surgery. That being...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

You are talking about 10 years ago. Have you spoken to any of the consultants lately? Every single one of them has told me to do research, this does apply to competitive specialties though but almost everything is competitive now. If you are referring to regional or rural hospitals sure but...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

Sorry I meant NEJM. Was talking to registrar today, her Medical Oncology doctor couldn't find a job so now he is doing a PHD. Her renal AT friend could not find a job in second year of their training. It's all about the research nowadays. If you can't bring anything additional to your...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

I agree that it shouldn't. However just had a talk with my USYD colleagues. Your research opportunities may suffer if you do not go to a prestigious university. The issue lies in funding and how much impact they have on a global level. I don't know if this is true but apparently last year's UWS...

    Specialities with best work/life balance?

UNSW and USYD are definitely tier 1 but not sure about Newcastle. At the end of the day people who move into these specialties are generally those that are really passionate and driven especially for the super competitive specialties. Generally the super competitive specialties are the ones...
