I think its just to show the severity of the sentence, and thus make comparisons between criminals. A criminal who received a 10000 year sentence probably committed much worse offences than one who received a 400 year sentence. Besides, who knows what may happen in the future. Scientists...

I think its more unnecessary. The only reason its as popular than ever before is because more teenagers are having unprotected sex. The situation and consequence (falling pregnant) can easily be avoided.
