I think it happens here in Australia too though...and I am sure it certainly happens in America... ...but my point is that I think its almost better to have a partner in that relationship rather than searching for 20yrs like most people do nowadays...

But I think they take into account financial status and future and make sure that they know the guy....plus, divorce is easily accessible these days...
