This years grads are looking at 51-55k p.a at a big 4.

I live in Sydney and I travel 60-90 minutes from work to home. It's really not that big a deal. There are alot of people who have to travel alot further. I just get a train. Sorry but I do not know how it works in Melbourne so I am really not much help.

I disagree. You will climb the ranks at twice the pace if you have done the cadetship. Especially from Consultant to Senior Manager. This thus = significantly higher remuneration.

Trainee's are EY working in the Tax division can do a double degree. It takes 6 years going at the recommended pace.
