    UniMelb curriculum

I think it's a little bit more than "just a dash" of PBL. Everyone seems to have this misconception that it's all old school, but they do plenty of waffly stuff too.

    some Qs bout med

Depends what you do. If you choose to, you can spend the rest of your life sleeping 4 hours a night like one of my tutors does. He's currently lecturing, facilitating PBL sessions, overseeing PhD students, working as a surgeon and writing/illustrating an anatomy book. Or you could get a cushy...

    Oxford

Newsflash: Oxford is quite possibly overrated. Clinton (a former Rhodes scholar) wrote about it in his autobiography. Don't remember any direct quotes, but it didn't exactly sound like the pinnacle of the academic world. Plus as you mention, you've lived sheltered for the last 16 years...

    Viewing your new SG

The shuffling was probably done in your year. I'm pretty sure that we stay in our respective collegias. Hmmm we had our last SGS today. I think most people feel quite apprehensive about mixing with the 1st years, though I suppose you must think the same (OMG BLOODY 2ND YEARS). I don't...

    Viewing your new SG

We had 225 at the start of last year. I estimate we have ~210 now, though we've been given no exact figures. Your year should have quite a few more people, seeing as the total no. of Y1/2 students is 456 - hence the disparity in the scenario groups.

    Eligibility for the MRBS?

Applications are still open for us. You can start the 4 years in 2nd year as well, so don't worry if you miss it this year. I'm not applying because I can't lie well enough to convince them that I'd like to see the country. I mean...writing a whole page on it? I do have friends who got it...

    Anatomy - A nightmare~!

We got "oh oh oh to touch and feel A virgin girl's vagina and hymen" Apparently the extra "a" is the beginning of an alternative name for CNVIII. Can't remember it off the top of my head though. Oh and our resident anatomy expert tells us that mnemonics are the lowest form of learning...

Has anyone with 98UAI or less ever made it into med..

Rural entry people can get in with UAIs of less than 92. I don't know how they compare with the rest of the cohort in terms of UMAT marks, but I think cut offs would be slightly lower. Mervyn, how many Norweigans are there in your year? I've heard their government usually sends ~6 per year...

    A few past paper questions

    a) They give you the hydronium ion concentration - it's there in brackets (0.01mol/L). Assuming the HCL is completely ionised, then it's [H+] conc. is equal to 0.01mol/L. Therefore, pH = 10^-0.01 b) Sulphuric acid is diprotic, HCL is monoprotic - you need multiply the [H+] concentration of...

Every facet of the 2004 HSC is forever gone??

It was >= 94 in my year (03). I have friends who would have gotten the prize if it was 93+ in 10 units.

    Med people

Hmmm I forgot you all read deleted messages. I wonder why that was implemented - it's obvious that if they were deleted, the OP didn't want people reading it. Welcome to medicine.

    Young'en with some basic questions

Form acidic oxides You do also need to know how to name haloalkanes and the like. There's no need to memorise them though, there's a system that allows you to name different variations of haloalkanes, esters etc.
