Depends on how the other guy goes in the HSC tests. What we do know is that your internal marks will have him ahead, and you behind him. But your external mark might be better than his so you may get a final mark higher than him.

Rent as in... borrow from the library? If you mean that, I don't think you can get a current edition that is loanable. You might be lucky in some cases but quite often you can't because it's in High Use (so only for 2 hours) or it cannot be loaned from the library at all.

The notes will make explicit references to the textbook. I found the textbook helpful as an extra resource, and as something that looks cool on my bookshelf.
