Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

So how about: - R, C, N and Q: symbols for those sets of numbers - Partial derivative symbol - Integral sign - Lowercase: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, theta, lambda, mu, pi, rho, sigma, phi, omega - Uppercase: gamma, pi, sigma, omega - the squiggly set things: { and } - the arrows that...

Year 12 2012 Chit Chat Thread

I remember in Year 10 though, my Commerce teacher said that when studying, we can only concentrate for so long. She said that it was like 50-55 minutes at most optimally, and then she would suggest just a simple 2-5 minute break - walking around, doing something else, taking a quick snack or...

Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

How about we form a list here of things we could write - someone make a thread, and let's see how we all compare. Because we have nothing better to do on our Saturday nights =P

You should ideally take breaks at the end of each hour.

Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

I think an interesting thing would be to ask how others write the more... difficult maths symbols. Like how do we draw the 'R' to say 'real numbers'? Or the partial derivative symbol? Or certain Greek letters? Integral signs?

Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

It's an effort to draw them like that. Especially when I'm doing like... area of a rectangle? Normal l's look like a 1 so I have to put the curve in. See "l" and "1" on the top line.

Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

So say if you wrote the word 'six'*, you'd use the curvy x as well? * - was originally going to specify another word quite similar... damn hormones of mine.

    Mid-Semester break plans

The Theory of Stats (MATH2801/2901) course pack. Not a book. And yes that is the Bivariate Probability Density function. Part a was fine, which was if p = 0 (i know p isn't rho but anyway...), then X and Y are independent. That was good. And then part b is like "show the conditional...

Random Poll: How do you write the number 7?

I experimented with putting a dash in my z's for the HSC... but uhh, didn't go too well. What I eventually ended up doing is making the z's sharper so I never got them confused with 2's. When I used to write 'x' for the variable, I'd get confused until a girl in my Year 7 maths class showed me...

    How do you master probability?

^ That. Set it out logically. That's how you do it. If you search around for when I've answered questions on probability or perms and combs, you see it set out as such: 1. ... 2. .... 3. ... 4. ... Step-by-step, so it's clear as day what I'm doing. Do that, and you'll end up doing a lot...

Don't laws such as "It is illegal to steal" and "It is illegal to murder" originate in religious texts and teachings...?

eww multiple choice And... yeah I suppose you're right. Looking back on my scribbles - didn't take that long.

I just solved this. Can you? (MX2 students should have a go)

Well, when I first saw the question saw the gamma thing as a constant and chucked it out the front intuitively. But umm, yes it's from my stats homework. And yes I did the long and horrible way.
