Need help with choosing uni for teaching!!!

I suggest you do that at somewhere that isnt UNSW. I have just finished a BSc/BEd at UNSW. The school of Ed is the most dysfunctional, disorganized school in the whole university. And what they teach is total garbage. (I went to UNSW because they have a good maths department, but that does...

    ODE - Ordinary Differential Equations

Yeah, Laplace transforms are good fun. They turn a problem involving calculus into one that only involves algebra. The strange thing at UNSW is that you can do a whole maths degree without learning any transform methods. I think they only teach them in PDEs and some of the engineering...

    ODE - Ordinary Differential Equations

That is one of the suggestions for the new syllabus. Linear ODEs are not too bad. (Meaning that there is a well developed theory for solving them.) There are also lots of methods for solving them numerically in the cases when you can't get an explicit solution.

    ODE - Ordinary Differential Equations

You can solve that DE using Laplace transforms (if you know about Laplace transforms). Otherwise, you have to solve the homogeneous equation using the characterisitic equation. (I assume that they've taught you how to do that at uni.) Then you have to find a particular solution. let y_p be...

Who here goes to a selective school?

The vast majority of independent and catholic schools are comprehensive. The only private selective school that I can think of is Sydney Grammar.

    CSSA Mathematics Advanced Paper

Calculus with trig functions is always done in radians. The limits of integration are given in radians, so if you wanted to evaluate in degrees (don't know why on earth you would), you will have to convert.

    Undergraduate/Postgraduate teaching degree

This webpage tells you what qualifications you need for teaching in NSW. Other states will probably be similar http://www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/What-qualifications-are-required-to-teach-in-NSW.html Doesn't seem likely that you can teach english with a law degree. (You might be able to teach...

    Why major in Mathematics?

They are about the only regional uni that seems to be improving its maths department is what I meant. The others seem to be in terminal decline. Rumour has it that there are more honours students at UOW this year than there are at UNSW...

    complex numbers question

The n^th roots of unity form a regular n-gon. You chop the n-gon up into n isosceles triangles in which the equal sides have length one. Then you use the area of a triangle formula from trig area = 1/2 ab sin(C) to evaluate the area of each triangle.

    complex numbers question

It is basically Thales' Theorem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thales'_theorem I think as far as actually demonstrating that algebraically, Affinity's method is probably the easiest.

Can I use Extension 1 methods in the 2 unit exam?

Re: 回复: Re: Can I use Extension 1 methods in the 2 unit exam? Was it a definite or indefinite integral? If it was a definite integral, you can work it out by using the fact that exp and log are inverses of each other, so you integrate x=e^y along the y-axis and then subtract this area from...

Can I use Extension 1 methods in the 2 unit exam?

A question like that would generally have some sort of lead in, though. Like: differentiate xlnx. They would actually be trying to test if you understand that differentiation and integration are almost inverses of each other. I think there is no reason why you couldn't use MX1 techniques in...

    Integration by Parts

Hehe. What I really love about integration by parts is when you have to do it twice, and you get the second one the wrong way round. You end up with something like "0=0." Very true. And completely unenlightening.

You know you've been doing too much maths when...

You learn about icosahedral viruses and think "yes of course, that's obvious. It's a platonic solid, after all."

    Why major in Mathematics?

Wollongong is about the only non group of 8 uni that you'd want to a maths degree at. MacU is OK if you want to do actuarial. Otherwise, for a straight maths degree, it is basically a choice of UNSW or USYD. If you want to move interstate you could consider ANU or Uni of Melb.

    Integration by Parts

Well, it is outside the syllabus, but you could use complex numbers. Then you don't have to use integration by parts at all. cos(x)= 1/2(e^(ix) + e^(-ix)) You just treat i like an ordinary constant, and it all works out in the end. (You will eventually get a real valued function out of doing...

Are select school/private school teachers of a higher quality?

The pay depends on which school system you teach in. In catholic schools, the wages are closely tied to the public school wages. Independent schools, however, vary alot. Some low fee independents pay less than the public award. I think they try to appear to the teachers sense of duty as...

    Physics 1A

The difficulty level is not that different for Higher Phys and normal Phys. As to whether it would be useful in a maths major, that probably depends on what type of maths you were planning to major in. If you're going to study applied maths, I think it would be helpful. People who do physics...

    What is honours in uni?

Honours differs from faculty to faculty. In the more traditional areas like science and arts, you have to spend an extra year at uni doing research and post graduate courses to graduate with honours. Generally, if you want to do a Phd you have to do honours first. In some other faculties...
