    Announcement (Re: Tutoring)

Yes I did mention speakerphones in that site when I was concerned about the reliability of voice over the net. I got onto the microphone headset, quite by accident. Last year, a student misunderstood "speakerphone" and got the much cheaper computer headset instead, so we tried them and it works...

    Announcement (Re: Tutoring)

Grey Council : A speakerphone is not needed. We have voice communication through the broadband using a cheap microphone headset (around $15).

    Announcement (Re: Tutoring)

Inasmuch as an ideal mathematical discussion would rely on visual representation and voice communication -senses of sight and sound, loosely defined as "high bandwidth"- nothing much can't be done via broadband, that can be done by face-to-face tutoring. For example, "take home" homework could...

Challenge complex numbers problem for current students

Must not allow a nice problem go to waste. A hard problem even by 4Unit standard but offers some useful insight to binomial coefficients. P=BoTo+B1*T1+B2*T2+...+BnTn where Bi & Ti mean probability of Bill and Ted each getting i heads Bi and Ti = [nCi * (1/2)^i * (1/2)^(n-1)] = nCi *...

    Announcement (Re: Tutoring)

Sorry hatty, its not free. But it nearly is. I charge $30 for a night session starting after 8:30 and I don't watch the clock. I had a session last night, started at 9:30, we knocked off at 11:30 -the student got tired!

    Challenging Locus Questions

___________________________________________________ CM_Tutor: Oldman, that is a really elegant geometric approach. Have you seen this before, or did you just see that that would work, and if you did, what tipped you off? __________________________________________________ I have been...

    Challenging Locus Questions

    de Moivre's

The "iff" is equivalent to two statements : if A then B, and, if B then A. Yes logical statements are done all the time in maths. For example to prove that SQRT(P) is irrational is to prove just one statement : If P is prime then SQRT(P) is irrational. Proving the equivalent ,if SQRT(P) is...

Keypad: If cos(n@) is irrational, then cos @ must be irrational, because if otherwise ie. cos @ is rational then cos(n@) is rational. Contradiction.

    de Moivre's

[ QUOTE Originally posted by KeypadSDM Oh god, not again. ] Might be time to get back on the learning track. Using de Moivre's, and collecting real terms, cos[n@]= cos^n[@] - nC2 cos^(n-2)[@]sin^2[@] + nC4cos^(n-4)[@]sin^4[@] - .... Even powers of sin can be expressed in terms of...

    de Moivre's

Sadly I am no real mathematician, and I use the form the student is used to. However, real mathematicians attend them fancy international conferences, and high level maths is populated with many French names : to pronounce them in less than the right way would nearly be offensive -trust me.

    de Moivre's

By now all ext 2 students should be familiar with de Moivre's*, here's an interesting exercise on it. Prove that cos(1o), cos(2o),cos(3o),cos(4o),cos(5o) are all irrationals. de Moivre's* : is your teacher a...

    Binomial

Goes to show that a good mathematician needs to have the memory of an elephant - elephantician, to add to mathmagician. Build up your math memory bank! Actually, my inspiration for this question is from humbler sources Jones/Couchman's old 3-unit book: "Give a verbal explanation why nCr...
