Which Textbooks to use for Maths Ext 2?

Cambridge is fantastic, however I wish their publisher solutions are at the same standard - I've taken to writing my own solutions for students when teaching out of Cambridge, because the setting out of Cambridge solutions (their answers are solid) is misleading.

    hard inequalities question

Ugh I just had the misfortune of spending 3 hours on this to no avail. This is harder than a lot of competition problems where Cauchy Schwartz, Jensen's, AM GM HM, bounding arguments etc feature more prominently. After having had a look at the answers - I can say starting off applying GM\geq...

    projectile motion with quadratic drag

Thanks @tywebb I will look into those resources to read up on the actual correct maths of quadratic drag. As someone who still values their continued employment, and also someone who knows Eddie personally - I guess everyone seems to be working off of the vague dot points of the 2017 syllabus...

    projectile motion with quadratic drag

Doing some late night browsing. If someone were to teach this topic - should quadratic drag be delved into if at all? The 2017 Syllabus: (disgusting) Solve problems involving projectile motion in a resisting (vague much?) medium and under the influence of gravity which include consideration of...

do you agree with the decision to remove euler's formula from the syllabus?

I'm not sure actually. What is the upshot of learning Eulers' when you can already be very good with De'Moivres? @tywebb I would love some questions that really leverage Euler's that falls within the scope of the syllabus.

    Mathematics Extension 1 Predictions/Thoughts

Love the cross products solution - another reflection of how poorly conceived the new HSC syllabus is, bring back circle geometry!

@tywebb do you mean pulled as in the question not considered in the marking? What was the precedent in standard and advanced? The question is good and lends itself to quite a few different solutions. Perhaps only a small fraction of attempts will make actual progress... Perhaps during pilot...

[Live POV] 2023 Extension 2 Maths Paper except you are the teacher seeing it for the first time.

    A wild guess but \overset maybe? \frac{d\overset{.}{x}}{dx} = \frac{d\overset{..}{x}}{dx} = \frac{d\overset{\ldots}{x}}{dx} \frac{d\overset{.}{x}}{dx} = \frac{d\overset{..}{x}}{dx} = \frac{d\overset{\ldots}{x}}{dx} I've been using \underset and \overset as a crutch ever since vector...

    (copy paste) boredofstudies.org/threads/teacher-pov-2023-hsc-extension-1-solution-speedrun-send-help.405894/ Post #12 for Mok's solution I have a 0 link limit so can't link D:

    Mathematics Extension 1 Predictions/Thoughts

I think Mok's solutions in that other thread in Ext1 is good - his 14c is the best looking answer. The youtube one I've corrected to v2 so it should be correct as of this morning.

    Mathematics Extension 1 Predictions/Thoughts

@notme123 User Luukas and I ended up with something similar, but maybe not as concise. A lot of cool otherwise solutions in the other thread though! I bet hey are going to be generous and award 1/3 mark for writing the area of a triangle formula! I feel the exam had a reasonable gradient of...

The Armin and Tywebb version of 14ci is a work of art! I also tried doodling components and acting like I can prove pythagoras for a few minutes and gave up! Mok's is probably what the writing committee intended - and boy that took projections to a whole new level, Luukas and I both missed what...

I've updated my solutions on the YT also, similar hints based solution to Luukas for Q14. I like Mok's also. The hint is awkward and I get too paranoid about cases to want to do that under exam conditions.

How do I start extension 2

Here is an alternative take on acceleration though: the school benefits from your extra band 6/E4s and you likely end up doing a lot of the learning outside of the classroom anyway. If your objective is to have a relaxed Year 11 and 12 full of leadership/cocurriculars, then this is great! If you...

How do I start extension 2

I like the Cambridge two part treatment of complex numbers, but just be clear with what your school will assess - because roots of unity and trig solutions of polynomials is often tested in a later assessment or trials. Furthermore, topics such as proofs (and in the past "Harder 3U") favours...

Hiya, In the mood to write up the solutions - the immediate feedback from my students was "hard". They probably overstudied the recent HSCs. Backseating my poor algebra is welcome! youtube: epicmaths Link to First Draft of the solutions is on the youtube live page for that stream!

[Live POV] 2023 Extension 2 Maths Paper except you are the teacher seeing it for the first time.

Thanks Tywebb and Sam14113, that Q5 was embarrassing! After considering 16c and arriving at the same answer - I can appreciate the open-ended format of the last question to really differentiate the top students. I'm starting to form the belief that this recent trend of hard multi-choice that...

[Live POV] 2023 Extension 2 Maths Paper except you are the teacher seeing it for the first time.

Ooooh yea when x\times yonly one of them need to be 0 at any one time so xy=0 in either case noway! I'm so rusty. I vibe with your rant though - I try to read into the intention of the question and work backwards from it, so the whole point of introducing the clockwise triangle is not that...
