    2021 BoS Chemistry Trial

Q11. Yeah right, I just re-read the question and it's A lol. B will give a pH below 7. I guess the question was designed for someone like me haha. Q14. Yeah, really depends on what information is available (I'm normally have reference samples, so these questions can be confusing for me in their...

    2021 BoS Chemistry Trial

Q10: There are several factors involved that can indicate what molecule it is (e.g. the two hydrogen environments are indicative of a symmetrical molecule). I'm just saying multiplicity is an important part of NMR and that should be made reasonably clear. Q11: A buffer is just a mixture of an...

    2021 BoS Chemistry Trial

Q27: Very cool question. A few points: A is effectively the environmental background because it precedes the zinc smelter. However, the calibration curve does not include a non-zero data point below A, so the linearity data is questionable at this range (i.e. 0-2 ppb). In terms of data...

    2021 BoS Chemistry Trial

Q1: A bunch of people get this one wrong for sure. Q6: Seems like a lot of work. Just need to make sure you get the formula right and be mindful of the Ksp. Q7: A bit ambiguous. You do form CO2 and bubbles form - I guess by "observation", you mean bubbles form but that's not necessarily...

    Identifying Esters/Carboxyllic Acid

It would also reduce carbonyls to the alcohol. I would recommend every just...don't use sodium metal lol.

    Dipole-Dipole vs Hydrogen Intermolecular Bonds

The hydrogen atom must be bonded to something highly electronegative (N/O/F) - this is what makes the bond highly polarised and able to form stronger intermolecular bonds. All hydrogen bonds (at least, in Year 12 to maybe third-year university chemistry?) will follow this structure: X and Y...

    Dipole-Dipole vs Hydrogen Intermolecular Bonds

What you've described sounds like a hydrogen bond to me...an H-bond is essentially a special type of dipole-dipole bond. For a hydrogen bond, you need: A hydrogen bond donor: the component/molecule which supplies the hydrogen atom. The donor must have a sufficiently large charge separation...

    Identifying Esters/Carboxyllic Acid

As mentioned, spectroscopy is probably the easiest (and best) way. If you're curious (this is easily beyond syllabus lol), you can always look up TLC stains and you'll see a shit load of ways to visualise different compounds. Try this...

    Tables for Science

I guess I've been out of HS for too long that I'm not entirely where the line between HS and university is anymore lol. As for the question, it's one of those things where being too broad/vague can make it very difficult. Also calorimetry, I was just reading online over it and the impression I...

    Whats the best University?

There's no simple answer and most of the things said above are correct. With that said, I'd argue that for research, the university matters because they generally have more funding and are better known abroad if you want to do research internationally. Again, it's very situational and you'd...

    Tables for Science

What school was this? But yeah, I don't even know where to start. There's too many things wrong...the detector changes, the light source changes, NMR is a completely different system (requires magnetic fields, radio waves are detected), there's also fluorescence spectroscopy which doesn't...

    NSW Premier resignation

We have some estimates at ~5%. I can see how someone would interpret that as very low or very high (my opinion is...that's very fucking high). If you choose to convict someone based on an accusation, then you'd expect a miscarriage of justice every twenty cases (and I'd expect more if bad people...

IUPAC Naming (Nomenclature) for HSC - Help please

Yeah, I'm not sure if ChemDraw follows CAS or IUPAC (but they're similar) but a lot of weird things happen in nomenclature. You'd have to follow it by the book to get a "correct" name. Either way, it's not a particularly important skill to have (but you should be able to name simple molecules)...

IUPAC Naming (Nomenclature) for HSC - Help please

ChemDraw tells me it is 6-amino-2,3,5-trihydroxy-4,6-dioxohex-2-enoic acid. There's absolutely no way this would be HSC level because I'm 100% sure get that shit wrong lol.

    Tables for Science

Right, got it. They generally seemed like reasonably good answers but generally less than I'd expect from a top-level student. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if it was accepted. However, it's effectively not answering the question because it's equivalent to suggesting a pH test. The real...

    Tables for Science

Are they supposed to be full mark answers? The Q26b (3 marks) question about identifying the compound...the student said MS and IR for spectroscopy which is incorrect IMO because MS is not spectroscopy (it's spectrometry).

Yeah, I think it's cool, even if it doesn't come with any fancy features.

    10 units or 12 units?

Taking 10 is way better so you can focus on actually getting good at those subjects. I don't agree with the concept of a "backup" because you should be good enough at all 10 units by the end of year 12. If you "need a backup", it really just means you didn't prepare well enough.

    Grammarly for advanced english

Helped me a lot for my PhD (the last month before thesis submission). For context, my thesis was around 300 pages (including all figures etc), maybe 150 pages of writing. In the end, one reviewer gave me minor corrections and the other gave no corrections - almost no comments were...

    CH3COONa or NaCH3COO?

Use the first way. I've never seen the second way be used anywhere.
