If its i7 then you can't get 8 gb ram anyway i dont think. i7 can only work with tri channel ram which means three ram sticks and i think it only comes in 3, 6 and 12 gb sizes. If you go 8 gb you must be getting some ddr2 dual channel stuff which won't work.

Don't get that much ram. I think you would be better off only getting 4 gb (or 6 gb if i7) and spending the remaining cash on a more expensive gfx card, like a HD4850 or GTX285.

I have had it crash on startup several times, but always managed to get the system restore working properly. I always wondered what caused the crash in the first place. Obviously it must be the registry thing.

Make sure it is has the latest service pack installed first, because vanilla XP did have problems with hard drives and space. Have you installed XP on the HDD with the two partitions, cause if you have then it is wierd that it can't see its own hard drive.
